Nine camps in nine verses carry nothing but names. They belong to the years under the sentence of chapter 14, which Deuteronomy 2:14 counts at thirty-eight. The record keeps the movements of a generation whose story the narrative had stopped telling.

Mount Shepher is the only mountain the list names between the Wilderness of Sinai and Mount Hor. Adam Clarke says where it lay cannot be determined. Read with Deuteronomy 2:14, it falls in the thirty-eight years between Kadesh-barnea and the brook Zered, while that generation died out.
