4 notes on this verseFrom Beth-jesimoth even unto Abel-shittim - The former of these places fell to the Reubenites, Jos 13:15-20. The Israelites were now come to the edge of Jordan, over against Jericho, where they afterwards passed. For further information on the subject of these different encampments, the reader is requested to refer to the extracts from Dr. Shaw at the end of the book of Exodus.

Zalmonah and Punon fall between mount Hor and Oboth, which is the stretch where Numbers 21:4-9 sets the fiery serpents and the serpent of brass that John 3:14-15 takes up by name. The mountains of Abarim before Nebo at verse 47 is the ground where Moses will be shown the land and die, in Deuteronomy 34:1-5, and the list names the place without saying so. Abel-shittim at verse 49 is the Shittim of Numbers 25:1, where Israel joined itself unto Baal-peor. The record of the stages stops at the camp where the plague of chapter 25 fell.

Shittim - The place where the people sinned in the matter of Peor, is here called Abel-Shittim - Abel signifies mourning; and probably this place was so called, from the mourning of Israel for that sin, and the heavy punishment inflicted on the sinners.
