And the timeline does the arguing: the reckoning of Genesis 15 comes years before the circumcision of Genesis 17 and four centuries before Sinai. Abraham was justified as an uncircumcised, law-less man, which is why Paul can call him father of everyone who believes. Circumcision was the seal on a righteousness already credited (4:11).
