on Exodus 39:4-7
Two onyx stones on the ephod's shoulders are engraved like a seal with the names of the sons of Israel. The text gives the reason, as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. Aaron carries the whole nation on him wherever he goes in this garment.

The waistband is woven as one piece with the ephod, as Exodus 28:8 ordered, so the garment and its band are one cloth. Adam Clarke ties the refrain to Exodus 25:40, the order to make everything by the pattern shown on the mountain. The ephod is finished first.
