on Exodus 39:4-7
Two onyx stones on the ephod's shoulders are engraved like a seal with the names of the sons of Israel. The text gives the reason, as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. Aaron carries the whole nation on him wherever he goes in this garment.

Exodus 35:27 says the leaders brought the onyx stones and the other gems for the ephod and breastpiece. Adam Clarke suggests the onyx may be the Egyptian pebble and sends the reader to Exodus 28:17. Gold filigree holds each stone.
