3 notes on this verseAnd came unto Elim - A place on the skirts of the deserts of Sin, two leagues from Tor, and nearly thirty from Corondel, a large bay on the east side of the Red Sea. Dr. Shaw, when he visited this place, found but nine of the twelve wells mentioned in the text, and instead of 70 palm trees, he found upwards of 2,000. See on Exo 15:27 (note). Stat. 6.

These first stages track Exodus 12 to 16 name for name, Succoth, Etham, Pi-hahiroth before Migdol, the crossing of the sea, Marah and Elim with its twelve fountains and seventy palm trees. Verse 10, the camp by the Red sea, has no place in the Exodus narrative, which moves straight from Elim to the wilderness of Sin at Exodus 16:1. John Gill marks the omission where it falls. The list keeps camps the story had no occasion to mention.
