Scattering is the last of the curses and it undoes the gift of the land itself. The enemies who take the ground are astonished at what they find, a detail a reader expects in a lament.

Jamieson, Fausset and Brown see this fulfilled when the nation's leading men were carried into Assyria and placed in various parts of that kingdom. The sword is drawn after the exiles, so it follows them out of the land. Verse 34 turns to the land they leave.
