Chapter summary

Blessings and curses. If you walk in my statutes and keep my commandments, rain in due season, the land yielding her increase, peace, the sword not through your land, fruitfulness, and my tabernacle among you. If not — terror, consumption, fever; enemies eating your increase; the heavens iron and the earth brass; wild beasts, the sword, pestilence, famine. The curses escalate sevenfold for persistent refusal, ending in exile and a scattered people. And yet — ‘if they shall confess their iniquity … then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham’. The chapter is the prophets' quarry for centuries.
