He was a young man of talent and energy, who, having been appointed by Solomon superintendent of the engineering works projected around Jerusalem, had risen into public notice, and on being informed by a very significant act of the prophet Ahijah of the royal destiny which, by divine appointment, awaited him, his mind took a new turn.

Ahijah's prophecy names the same sins as the narrator did at verse 33, Ashtoreth, Chemosh and Milcom by name, and restates thread 1 twice more: one tribe held back for David my servant's sake and for Jerusalem's sake, verse 32, and the kingdom kept whole in Solomon's own lifetime for David my servant's sake, whom I chose, verse 34. Four statements of the same covenant reason in one chapter, at 11:12, 11:13, 11:32 and here at 11:34, is the highest concentration of the phrase anywhere in Kings. The judgment is real and the mercy is stated in the same sentence as the judgment, not after it.

The plural they takes in Solomon's people with him. Matthew Henry compares Deuteronomy 9:4 to 5, where Israel received Canaan for the wickedness of its nations and for no righteousness of its own. The ten tribes pass to Jeroboam on the same terms.
