Mark 9:1

Shall not taste of death till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power sits at the chapter's seam, six days before the transfiguration Mark places right after it, and the readings are several: the oldest and most common ties the promise directly to the transfiguration itself, three of the twelve seeing the kingdom's glory unveiled within days. Others hold the fulfillment at the resurrection and Pentecost, others still at the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70 within the lifetime of some standing there, and each reading has held serious defenders across the church's history. The bench names these without settling the question, since Mark's own next words, and after six days, invite the reader toward the transfiguration reading without forcing it.

Mark 9:2-4

he was transfigured before them: He was transfigured before them is Mark's one word for a change in appearance so total that Matthew must add the sun and Luke the lightning to describe it, and the same three, Peter, James, and John, are the same three he will take furthest into Gethsemane, the glory and the agony witnessed by the identical company. His raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow, so as no fuller on earth can white them, Mark's own homely comparison betraying an eyewitness reaching for the only image close at hand. Elias with Moses appear talking with him, the bench reading the pair as the prophets and the law both bearing witness to the one both had pointed toward, standing together at the hinge of the story.

Mark 9:5-6

it is good for us to be here: It is good for us to be here draws from Peter the wish to build three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias, an instinct the bench reads charitably as a longing to hold the moment rather than let it pass, though it wrongly ranks Moses and Elijah beside the Son. Mark supplies the correction Peter himself could not: for he wist not what to say, for they were sore afraid, an unflattering honesty about his own spokesman that the other Gospels soften and Mark's Petrine source apparently did not mind keeping. The three equal tabernacles would have left Jesus one voice among three; the verse that follows corrects the arithmetic directly.

Mark 9:7-8

This is my beloved Son, hear him answers Peter's proposal directly, the cloud of the divine presence overshadowing the mountain the same way it once filled the tabernacle, and the voice is the second of the three Son of God witnesses the book is built around, following the baptism at 1:11 and preceding the centurion at 15:39. Hear him is the command Moses and Elijah's own presence had just seemed to complicate, and the bench reads the two added words as Mark's plainest statement yet that the law and the prophets both yield now to the greater voice. When the cloud lifts, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only, the vision closing on the same singular authority the voice had named.

Mark 9:9-10

Tell no man what things they had seen is the fifth silencing in Mark and the only one given an expiration date, till the Son of man were risen from the dead, since a report of glory without the cross to explain it would only feed the crowd's appetite for a conquering king. The bench reads the timing as pastoral rather than merely secretive, the transfiguration's meaning being incomplete until the resurrection supplies its other half. The three keep the saying between themselves but confess they do not understand it, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean, the same incomprehension that meets every passion prediction in this book.

Mark 9:11-13

Elias must first come raises the scribes' own reading of Malachi's prophecy, and Jesus answers in two parts, agreeing that Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things, then adding that Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him. The bench reads the second Elias as John the Baptist, whose death at Herod's hand Mark has already told in full at chapter six, the restorer himself rejected and killed exactly as the Son of man he announced would be. The pattern of prophesied suffering is thereby extended backward from Jesus to his forerunner, both fulfilling what was written of them though neither text names the manner of death outright.

Mark 9:14-19

A great multitude about them meets Jesus coming down from the transfiguration's glory straight into a scene of failure, the nine unable to cast out a spirit that has thrown a boy into fire and water since childhood. O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you, how long shall I suffer you is the sharpest complaint Jesus voices in this Gospel, and the bench reads it as directed past the crowd to the disciples' own failed faith as much as to any unbelief in the father. Bring him unto me closes the rebuke with the only remedy the scene offers, the Lord's own presence where the nine had proved insufficient.

Mark 9:20-24

Wallowed foaming is the violence Jesus meets the instant the boy is brought before him, straightway the spirit tare him, and the father's plea when asked how long is it ago since this came unto him, of a child, reveals a lifetime spent watching it try to destroy his son in fire and in water. If thou canst believe answers the father's own if thou canst do any thing with a correction, turning the doubt back where it belongs, and the cry that follows, Lord, I believe, help thou mine unbelief, is the bench's favored honest prayer in the Gospels, faith and its lack confessed together in the same breath. The father asks for compassion; Jesus answers by relocating the whole question of possibility onto faith rather than onto the severity of the case.

Mark 9:25-27

Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him is spoken the moment the crowd presses in, Jesus acting before the audience can grow into a spectacle rather than because of it. The spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him, and he was as one dead, so convincingly that many said, he is dead, the violence of the departure matching the violence of the possession itself. But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up, and he arose, the same gesture of raising used elsewhere in this Gospel for the dead, Jairus's daughter chief among them, and the bench reads the echo as deliberate, deliverance and resurrection sharing one grammar in Mark.

Mark 9:28-29

Why could not we cast him out is asked privately, away from the crowd, the disciples having been given authority to cast out devils back at chapter six and now needing to understand its failure. This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting names the remedy directly, and the bench reads the answer as pointing not to a technique withheld from them but to a dependence on God they had let slip into presumption on their own delegated power. The earlier success had apparently not been converted into a settled habit of prayer, and Jesus names the gap without softening it.

Mark 9:30-32

Would not that any man should know it marks Jesus deliberately withdrawing from public ministry through Galilee to give his own the second passion prediction without a crowd's interference, the Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him, and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. The verb delivered anticipates both Judas's betrayal and the Father's own giving up of the Son, a double sense the bench reads as intentional rather than accidental in the Greek. They understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him, the second recorded failure to grasp the prediction, now compounded by a fear that keeps them silent rather than merely puzzled as after the first.

Mark 9:33-35

What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way lands directly on the heels of the second passion prediction, the disciples having spent the very road where Jesus spoke of his own death arguing among themselves who should be the greatest. They held their peace, ashamed to answer, and Jesus does not let the silence stand, sitting down deliberately, the posture of a teacher about to render judgment, and calling the twelve to him. If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all inverts the ambition outright, and the bench reads the timing as the whole point, greatness measured in service named in the same breath as a cross just predicted.

Mark 9:36-37

Set him in the midst of them is an acted parable before a word is spoken, the child having no status to advance and no claim to greatness in that culture's own reckoning, taken up in the Lord's own arms as the picture of the servanthood just commanded. Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me identifies reception of the powerless with reception of Christ himself, and receiveth not me, but him that sent me extends the identification a further step, to the Father who sent him. The bench reads the saying as the practical application the disputing disciples needed most, greatness redefined not as a rank to seek but as a welcome to extend to those who cannot repay it.

Mark 9:38-41

Casting out devils in thy name describes a man working in Christ's authority without belonging to the twelve's own company, and John's complaint, he followeth not us, betrays the same appetite for rank the child had just corrected, loyalty measured by attachment to the group rather than to the Lord. Forbid him not, for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me broadens the boundary of who may be for Christ well beyond the visible circle of the twelve, and he that is not against us is on our part states the principle in its most quotable form. Even a cup of water given in my name, because ye belong to Christ, secures its reward, the bench noting the standard has now fallen from mighty works to the smallest imaginable kindness done in his name.

Mark 9:42

Offend one of these little ones that believe in me turns from welcoming the powerless to warning against harming them, the millstone hanged about his neck being the great mill-stone turned by a donkey rather than the smaller hand-mill, a death by drowning the bench reads as deliberately horrific in a culture that prized burial. The little ones are read most naturally as the childlike believers just set in the disciples' midst, whether children in years or the newly and simply faithful, and either reading keeps the force of the warning intact. Better for him is comparative language Jesus uses nowhere lightly, weighing a millstone drowning against the judgment that causing such a one to stumble actually earns.

Mark 9:43-48

If thy hand offend thee, cut it off opens a triad repeated three times over, hand, foot, and eye, each pressed with the same comparison, better to enter life maimed than to keep the whole body and be cast into hell, and Mark alone adds the refrain twice more, where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched, borrowed from Isaiah's own closing vision. The bench reads the amputation as hyperbole in the manner of the Sermon on the Mount, urging the most drastic severing of whatever occasion leads to sin rather than commanding literal self-mutilation, since the hand and foot and eye are not themselves the sinner. Hell translates Gehenna, the valley outside Jerusalem associated with child sacrifice and later with burning refuse, a place name Jesus turns into the plainest image of final judgment he uses anywhere in this Gospel.

Mark 9:49-50

Every one shall be salted with fire is among the hardest single sayings in Mark to render with confidence, and the bench offers it as either the refining trial every disciple passes through, in the manner of the salted sacrifices of Leviticus, or a continuing echo of the fire of judgment just named in the verses before. Salt is good, but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it turns the image from judgment to preservation, salt standing for a disciple's own distinctive influence that cannot be manufactured again once it is gone. Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another closes the discourse where it began, back at the disciples' own dispute over greatness, salt and peace named together as the cure for the rivalry the chapter has been answering.
