Jeremiah 7:1-3

the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying: Jeremiah is told to stand at the gate of the house itself and preach to the worshippers as they enter, the temple courtyard turned into a courtroom on the way to sacrifice. The message is conditional rather than doomed from the start: amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place, the same land grant offered fresh to a generation that has not yet forfeited it. The bench reads the setting as deliberate, a festival crowd caught at the one moment attendance was guaranteed.

Jeremiah 7:4-7

Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord: The temple slogan is quoted three times running, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, a chant repeated until it becomes empty of the God it names. Gill reads the threefold repetition as the people's own liturgy turned against them, confidence in the building standing in for the obedience the building was built to house. The conditions that follow, honest judgment, no oppression of the stranger, the fatherless and the widow, no innocent blood, no idolatry, are the same terms Israel accepted at Sinai, restated rather than invented.

Jeremiah 7:8-11

trust in lying words, that cannot profit: Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit turns the indictment plain: the temple itself has become the cover for theft, murder, adultery and false swearing named in verse 9. Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? is the sentence Jesus repeats in all three Synoptic accounts of the temple cleansing, Matthew 21:13, Mark 11:17 and Luke 19:46, and the older writers note that a den of robbers is not where robbery happens but where robbers go to feel safe after the crime is done. The charge is not thieves worshipping mixed with the righteous but the temple itself functioning as a hideout for guilt already committed.

Jeremiah 7:12-15

go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh: The command to go now to Shiloh points at the tabernacle's first resting place, destroyed after Eli's sons and remembered in Psalm 78:60-64 and 1 Samuel 4's account of the ark's capture. If the ground where the ark itself stood carried no permanent immunity, the bench argues, then the second temple carries none either, and the reasoning carries the argument's weight rather than the topic verse: as I have done to Shiloh, so will I do to this house. The whole seed of Ephraim being cast out folds the northern kingdom's exile, already a century old, into the same warning.

Jeremiah 7:16-20

pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them: The command not to intercede is the sharpest line in the sermon, pray not thou for this people, matching the same refusal at 11:14 and 14:11, three times in the book Jeremiah is told to stop praying for a people he has not stopped loving. The queen of heaven worship pictured at verse 18, the whole household at work, children gathering wood, fathers kindling the fire, women baking cakes, is named again at 44:17-25 as a devotion the exiles kept even after the fall, likely the goddess Ishtar or Astarte under a title Judah gave her. Gill and Clarke both note the domestic scale of the idolatry, worship built into the family's daily labor rather than confined to a shrine.

Jeremiah 7:21-23

Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh: Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh is heard by the bench as biting irony: since sacrifice without obedience buys nothing, the priests may as well eat the meat meant for the altar themselves. Verse 22's claim, I spake not unto your fathers concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices, is read two ways among the older writers, some taking it as emphasis meaning the moral command came first and mattered more, others noting the sacrificial law was not the first word given at Sinai, obedience was. Either reading lands on verse 23: obey my voice, and I will be your God, the covenant's own priority stated in the Lord's own words.

Jeremiah 7:24-28

went backward, and not forward: The record runs backward through the whole exodus generation to the present one, walking in the counsels and imagination of their evil heart, going backward, and not forward, prophet after prophet sent daily and unheard. Verse 26's summary, they did worse than their fathers, closes the section Jeremiah is told to preach anyway, though the outcome is announced in advance: they will not hearken to thee. The last line, truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth, describes not a lie told but truth gone missing entirely, which the bench reads as the sermon's true diagnosis.

Jeremiah 7:29-31

Cut off thine hair, O Jerusalem, and cast it away: Cut off thine hair is a mourning rite turned into a command, Jerusalem told to grieve for herself as for the dead, because the generation of his wrath already stands under sentence. The high places of Tophet in the valley of the son of Hinnom, where sons and daughters were burned in the fire, is named at verse 31 as a horror the Lord himself denies commanding, neither came it into my heart, a rejection of any claim that Molech worship descended from the Lord's own altar. The valley's later name, Gehenna, carries this scene forward into the New Testament's own word for final judgment.

Jeremiah 7:32-34

but the valley of slaughter: The valley renamed, no more Tophet but the valley of slaughter, becomes a burial ground so full that they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place, corpses given to birds and beasts rather than the ground, an image the bench reads as siege famine's actual aftermath rather than poetry alone. The four silenced voices, mirth, gladness, bridegroom, bride, mark ordinary domestic joy as the casualty judgment reaches for, the same list Jeremiah repeats at 16:9, 25:10 and 33:11 and that Revelation 18:23 echoes over Babylon's own fall. The land left desolate closes the sermon on the same ground it opened, the temple gate, now emptied of the very people it was preached to.
