What was recalled is named here: “Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail”. The next verse says the mercies “are new every morning”. “The LORD is my portion” answers verse 18, where his hope from the LORD had perished.

Portion is the word for a share of the land. Albert Barnes points to Numbers 18:20, where the LORD tells Aaron that He Himself is the share of the priests. Matthew Henry notes that every portion on earth will perish, and with the land lost the soul still has God.
