When persons draw nigh to God in a way of duty, and particularly in this of prayer, and calling on his name; he draws nigh to them in a way of grace and mercy, and manifests himself to them, and works salvation for them. The Targum is, "thou didst cause an angel to draw near to deliver me in the day that I prayed unto thee:'' thou saidst, fear not; any of thine enemies; or that thou shouldest not be delivered from them; see Isa 41:10.

I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon answers the drowning language of the verse before it with prayer, the pit itself becoming the place the cry was made from rather than only the place of despair. Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry and thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not record an answered prayer in the plainest terms the chapter uses, the Lord's own words quoted back. O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life closes the narrative with deliverance already accomplished, the man's own rescue placed before the imprecation that follows it, testimony given before the plea for judgment on his enemies.

How different are our experiences from our fears! This man of God had said, "When I cry and shout He shuts out my prayer." He had said again, "You have covered Yourself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through." He had added to that, "Surely against me is He turned." But now he corrects his misapprehensions. Neither was prayer shut out, nor had God turned against him, for he joyfully confesses, "You drew near in the day that I called upon You: You said, Fear not."
