on Joshua 8:5-8
Joshua tells the men what will happen, and the enemy’s expected words, “as they did before”, rest on the thirty-six killed at 7:5. The men of Ai have a real victory behind them and will believe a second flight. Verse 8 puts the plan under the command of the LORD.

Matthew Henry reads the victory Ai won at 7:5 through Isaiah 10, where Assyria is the rod God uses to correct his own people. Once the correction was over, Henry says, the rod itself was thrown into the fire, though its men had meant only to destroy Israel.
