on Joshua 8:5-8
Joshua tells the men what will happen, and the enemy’s expected words, “as they did before”, rest on the thirty-six killed at 7:5. The men of Ai have a real victory behind them and will believe a second flight. Verse 8 puts the plan under the command of the LORD.

The ambush is to rise at the signal Joshua gives in verse 18, and John Gill adds a lookout posted to watch the flight. Joshua speaks of the outcome as certain. Gill grounds that confidence in the promise of verse 1, where the city was already given into his hand.
