Explanatory Notes upon the Old Testament (1765)

Maidservant - His concubine, whom he so calls by way of reproach. Over Shechem - By which limitation of their power, and his kingdom, he reflects contempt upon him, and chargeth them with presumption, that having only power over their own city, they durst impose a king upon all Israel.

Jotham drops the picture and names the men standing below him. His charge has three parts: Gideon "risked his life to deliver you," they killed his seventy sons "on a single stone," and they crowned the son of his maidservant "because he is your brother". The speech turns the narrative of verse 5 back on the town that did the killing.

John Wesley hears reproach in the son of his maidservant, since 8:31 calls her a concubine. He also reads king over the leaders of Shechem as a pointed limit, because one city's leaders had no right to set a king over all Israel. Verse 22 shows him reigning over Israel anyway.
