Commentary on the Whole Bible (1710)

(2.) That they thought Moses able to bear those discoveries of the divine glory which they by reason of guilt were sensible of their inability to stand up under. They believed him to be a favourite of Heaven, and also one that would be faithful to them; yet at other times they murmured at him, and but a little before this were ready to stone him, Exod. xvii.

This site's exposition

all the heads of your tribes and your elders approached me

on Deuteronomy 5:23-27

The heads of the tribes and the elders ask Moses to "listen to all that the LORD our God says" and tell them. Having heard God and lived, they fear hearing him again, and 18:15-18 answers with the promised prophet.

This site's exposition

we will listen and obey

The request ends in a promise, which verse 28 hears and approves and verse 29 answers with a wish for the heart to keep it. Matthew Henry notes that the people trusted Moses to bear what they could not.
