on Deuteronomy 5:6-7
The ten words open with a rescue that has already happened, and the commandment follows it. Exodus 20:2 gives the same preface in the same words, fixing the order in both accounts: what God did, then what Israel owes.

The first word forbids Israel any other god before the LORD. It follows directly on the claim of verse 6 that he alone brought them out of slavery. John Wesley asks here whether one has worshipped God in spirit and in truth.

There being little said, concerning the spiritual sense of the Ten Commandments, in the notes on the twentieth of Exodus, I think it needful to add a few questions here, which the reader may answer between God and his own soul.
