Catechetical Lecture 12.13-14 · Written before 386.

If to hear the voice of God speaking is a cause of death, how will the sight of God not cause death? And why wonder? Even Moses himself says, "I am greatly terrified and trembling." What then? Would you that he who came for our salvation become a minister of destruction because men could not bear him? Or rather that he should temper his grace to our measure?

The heads of the tribes and the elders ask Moses to "listen to all that the LORD our God says" and tell them. Having heard God and lived, they fear hearing him again, and 18:15-18 answers with the promised prophet.

The elders call him the living God, and they set Israel apart from all flesh as the one people who heard him and survived. Cyril of Jerusalem reasons from this verse that if hearing God's voice brings death, the sight of God would do so more.
