Chapter summary

The crisis of presence. ‘I will not go up in the midst of thee … lest I consume thee.’ The people mourn; Moses pitches the tent of meeting outside the camp. The LORD speaks to Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. Moses pleads: ‘if thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? Is it not in that thou goest with us?’ And the LORD grants his request, because Moses has found grace in his sight. Then Moses asks to see God's glory: ‘I will make all my goodness pass before thee … thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live’.
