6 notes on this verseAccording to all that thy soul desireth - It appears from this that Jeroboam had affected the kingdom, and was seeking for an opportunity to seize on the government. God now tells him, by his prophet, what he shall have, and what he shall not have, in order to prevent him from attempting to seize on the whole kingdom, to the prejudice of the spiritual seed of David.

on 1 Kings 11:35-37
The kingdom passes from Solomon's son, not from Solomon, softening the immediate blow while making the coming division certain. Jeroboam is offered the full desire of his soul, king over Israel, on terms the next two verses will make conditional rather than unconditional.

Adam Clarke and John Gill read the phrase as proof that Jeroboam already wanted the crown. Matthew Henry reads the order the other way. The prophecy came first and emboldened Jeroboam to raise his hand against the king.

But this was the cause, or rather this was the story, of the lifting up of his hand against the king: Solomon made him ruler over the tribes of Joseph, and, as he was going to take possession of his government, he was told by a prophet in God's name that he should be king, which emboldened him to aim high, and in some instances to oppose the king and give him vexation.
