John13chapter 13

John 13:1

Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come, John opens the Book of Glory with the very word that had been held back since 2:4, the delayed hour finally arriving. Having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end, unto the end carrying both senses the Greek allows, to the last moment of his life and to the uttermost measure of love, and the bench reads the whole chapter that follows as the definition of what that love does with the time it has left. Everything from the towel to the cross is this verse worked out in action.

John 13:2-3

The devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot to betray him names the true author standing behind the coming betrayal, human treachery and satanic instigation held together without either excusing Judas or reducing him to a puppet. Against that darkness John sets the full light of Jesus' own self-knowledge, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God, the same authority named in the prologue now stated as present fact in his own mind at supper. The bench reads the pairing as deliberate: the Lord who is about to kneel with a towel is not a victim of circumstance but a Sovereign choosing the lowest place while knowing exactly who he is.

John 13:4-5

He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself: every verb in the sentence belongs to a household slave, the lowest servant's task in that culture being precisely to wash the feet dust and sandal had soiled on the road. Jesus performs the whole sequence himself, and John lingers over each motion, rising, laying aside, girding, pouring, washing, wiping, the deliberate pace of the account matching the deliberateness of the act. The bench notes the irony the disciples must have felt even as it happened, the Lord of verse 3, all things in his hands, kneeling with a basin before the very men who moments earlier had been arguing over rank (Luke 22:24).

John 13:6-8

Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Peter's question carries the same shocked reversal the whole room must have felt, and his refusal, Thou shalt never wash my feet, is genuine reverence pointed the wrong direction, honoring the Master's dignity while missing what the Master is actually doing. Jesus answers with a plain either-or, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me, raising the act from etiquette to necessity, a cleansing Peter cannot supply for himself and cannot refuse without losing his place. The bench reads the exchange as the whole gospel in miniature, human resistance to grace mistaken for humility, and grace insisting on its own terms.

John 13:9-11

Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head, Peter overcorrects the instant he understands the stakes, wanting the whole of the cleansing rather than the part offered, and Jesus answers by distinguishing two kinds of washing at once. He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit speaks of the traveler already bathed who needs only the day's dust removed, a picture the bench reads as the difference between the once for all cleansing of regeneration and the daily washing a disciple still needs walking through a fallen world. Ye are clean, but not all closes the exchange on the one man in the room for whom no washing, of feet or otherwise, will do any good, since John supplies the reason plainly, for he knew who should betray him.

John 13:12-15

Know ye what I have done to you? Jesus asks once he has finished, resumed his garments, and sat down again, and he answers his own question by naming the two titles the disciples freely give him, Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am, before drawing the conclusion those titles make binding rather than optional. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet argues from the greater to the lesser, and the bench notes that the point is not a liturgical footwashing rite so much as the posture behind it, since verse 15 names it an example, that ye should do as I have done to you, a pattern of mutual humility rather than a fixed ceremony. Augustine reads the whole scene as the Lord's own commentary on Philippians 2, deity taking the form of a servant acted out at a supper table.

John 13:16-17

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him: the doubled amen marks the maxim's weight, and its logic runs in one direction only, if the Lord has knelt, no disciple stands above kneeling. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them closes the principle on obedience rather than information, the bench noting John's careful distinction between knowing a truth and being blessed by it, a gap this Gospel returns to more than once. Knowledge that stays in the head has not yet reached the feet the Lord has just washed.

John 13:18-19

I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen, Jesus qualifies the blessing of verse 17 at once, and names the exception by Scripture rather than by accusation, that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me, Psalm 41:9's picture of betrayal by an intimate now fulfilled at this very table. Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he gives the reason for the warning, prophecy named in advance so that its fulfillment strengthens rather than shakes the disciples' faith. The bench reads I am he as one more echo of the absolute I AM that runs through this Gospel, spoken here quietly before it is spoken with force in the garden (18:5-6).

John 13:20

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me: even in the same breath as Judas' betrayal, Jesus commissions the eleven who remain, the chain of authority running from Father to Son to apostle unbroken by the treachery about to unfold. The bench reads the timing as significant, the promise of verse 20 standing directly beside the warning of verse 18, since the Lord's larger purpose for his sent ones does not pause for the failure of one among them. A messenger genuinely received carries the sender's own presence with him, the principle behind every true gospel commission since.

John 13:21

When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me: the same word for troubled used of his own soul at the tomb of Lazarus (11:33) and again in this very upper room (14:1, 14:27) shows a real human grief at the announcement, not a detached prediction. The doubled amen again marks the saying's solemnity, and the bench notes that Jesus names the betrayal to the whole company rather than to Judas alone, giving every disciple, and every reader since, the chance to ask the question the next verses record. The warmth of verse 1's love unto the end and the pain of this verse belong to the same evening without contradiction.

John 13:22-25

Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake, and the bench notes what is absent from the reaction, no one names Judas, no one suspects him above himself, the traitor's cover apparently perfect to every eye but the Lord's. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, is leaning on Jesus' bosom, the reclining posture of an intimate friend at the meal, and Peter signals to him rather than asking directly, a small human detail the bench reads as Peter still finding his own access to Jesus less immediate than the beloved disciple's. Lord, who is it? is the question every disciple in every age has had reason to ask of his own heart, not only that evening's company.

John 13:26-27

He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it, and when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot: the sop was a mark of honor at an eastern table, the host's own hand offering a guest a choice piece, and the bench reads Jesus' last direct appeal to Judas as an act of love extended even at this final moment, not a public accusation. And after the sop Satan entered into him marks the point of no return, the man who had already let the devil put betrayal into his heart (v.2) now surrendering himself fully to it, and Jesus' word, That thou doest, do quickly, is neither permission nor despair but the Lord choosing the timing of his own arrest rather than merely enduring it.

John 13:28-30

Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him, John records, the rest of the company still guessing at charity or errands rather than treachery, since Judas held the bag and such an errand at feast time would have seemed ordinary. He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night, and the bench reads John's closing phrase as more than a note of the hour, the physical darkness matching the spiritual darkness the man walks into, the same light and darkness thread that has run through this Gospel since 1:5 closing over one man by his own choice. Every commentator from Chrysostom onward has heard in those four words, and it was night, one of Scripture's starkest single sentences.

John 13:31-32

Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him: with the traitor gone and the cross now unavoidable, the announcement of 12:23 repeats in the present tense, the hour no longer approaching but arrived. If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him states the two-way exchange of glory the prologue named in eternity, now moving toward its historical fulfillment within hours. The bench reads Judas' departure as the very thing that frees the room for this announcement, the betrayal already set in motion becoming the means, not merely the obstacle, to the glory Jesus names.

John 13:33

Little children, yet a little while I am with you: the address is tender and occurs nowhere else on Jesus' own lips in this Gospel, a term of affection for men about to lose him that night without yet understanding what losing him will mean. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you repeats the hard word of 7:34 and 8:21, but the bench notes the sharp difference in audience and tone, the same words that closed a door on hostile questioners here open into three chapters of comfort and promise for those who love him. The impossibility is temporary for the disciples in a way it was not for his accusers, as 14:3 will make explicit.

John 13:34-35

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another: the command to love was old, Leviticus 19:18 had already given it, but the bench reads the newness in the measure now attached, as I have loved you, a standard just demonstrated with a basin and towel and about to be demonstrated at Calvary. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another makes love the one badge of authentic discipleship visible to outsiders, a mark no orthodoxy of confession can substitute for. Tertullian's report that the pagans of his era said of the church, see how they love one another, is the earliest known echo of the disciples actually wearing this badge.

John 13:36-38

Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? and Jesus answers with a promise folded inside the hard word of verse 33, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards, a door closed for tonight but not forever. Peter answers with the same confidence that will fail him within hours, I will lay down my life for thy sake, and Jesus meets the boast with a question that exposes it, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake?, before naming the specific failure ahead, the cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice. The bench reads the exchange as mercy rather than mockery, Jesus telling Peter exactly what is coming so that when it comes, the same Lord's earlier word can bring him back rather than leave him in despair, as 21:15-17 will show it does.
