John11chapter 11

John 11:1-2

A certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany introduces the household whose grief will frame the seventh and greatest sign of this Gospel. John's parenthetical note, it was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, points forward to chapter twelve's anointing at Bethany, an event not yet narrated but evidently well known to his first readers already. The bench takes the forward reference as evidence John writes for a community that already treasures Mary's act, naming her here by what she would do rather than by anything reported yet.

John 11:3-4

The sisters' message, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick, appeals to love rather than merit, confident enough in that love to ask for nothing more explicit than notice. This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God answers before he has even seen the man, a statement true in its ultimate outcome though it will require Lazarus to die first, the same pattern of a promise fulfilled in a way that tests faith along the way. That the Son of God might be glorified thereby ties the miracle to come directly into the hour thread running through the whole Gospel, glory reached through and beyond death rather than by its avoidance.

John 11:5-6

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus: Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus is placed deliberately before the delay that follows, so that no reader mistakes the two days he abode still in the same place for indifference. The bench reads the sequence as the hardest part of the chapter to hold together honestly, love and delay side by side without either canceling the other, since John will not let the reader excuse the wait as accidental. The delay itself becomes part of the sign's design, ensuring Lazarus is fully dead and buried before Jesus arrives rather than merely gravely ill.

John 11:7-8

Let us go into Judea again proposes a return to the very region where 10:31 had just recorded an attempt to stone him, and the disciples' alarm, the Jews of late sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again, is entirely reasonable given what has just happened. Their question shows the disciples reading the danger correctly even while missing the larger purpose behind the trip. The bench notes this as one more instance of the hour governing events, danger real but never determinative while the appointed time has not yet come.

John 11:9-10

Are there not twelve hours in the day answers the disciples' fear with a proverb about appointed time rather than a direct denial of danger, each day divided into its fixed measure regardless of threats. If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world uses the light and darkness thread already developed at 8:12 and 9:5, walking safely within God's appointed time for a task. The bench reads the saying as Jesus applying to himself the same principle of a divinely fixed hour that has governed the whole Gospel since 2:4, danger no threat while the Father's clock has not yet run out.

John 11:11-13

Our friend Lazarus sleepeth, but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep uses death as a figure so gentle the disciples miss it entirely, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well taking the euphemism as literal rest and good news of recovery. John's aside states plainly what Jesus meant, howbeit Jesus spake of his death, correcting the misunderstanding for the reader even before Jesus corrects it for the disciples. The bench notes sleep as the New Testament's own recurring figure for the believer's death, a temporary state from which waking follows, not annihilation.

John 11:14-15

Lazarus is dead: Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead drops the figure entirely once it has served its purpose, direct statement replacing the gentler euphemism now that the point about sleep and waking has been made. I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe states outright that the delay served the disciples' faith, a hard saying set beside real grief in the household waiting at Bethany. Nevertheless let us go unto him turns the statement immediately into action, sorrow at the timing never becoming an excuse to stay away.

John 11:16

Thomas, called Didymus, the Twin, speaks the only recorded word for him before the upper room, and it shows real courage rather than the doubt he is remembered for later. Let us also go, that we may die with him assumes the trip to Judea will end in the master's death, and volunteers to share it rather than counseling caution as the other disciples had just done. The bench reads the moment as evidence Thomas deserves a fuller portrait than the single later scene has given him in common memory, loyal to the point of expecting to die alongside his Lord.

John 11:17-19

He had lain in the grave four days already matters because popular belief held that the soul lingered near the body for three days hoping to reenter it, then departed once decay set in, so four days placed Lazarus's death beyond any doubt or hope of a mistaken diagnosis. Bethany nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off explains why many of the Jews had come from the capital to comfort Martha and Mary, a formal mourning custom that meant the miracle about to happen would take place before witnesses with every reason to report it back to the city. John 11:20

Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him shows the sister already characterized by Luke as active and busy true to form even in grief, moving toward the news rather than waiting for it. Mary sat still in the house matches the same Luke portrait of the sister who sat at the Lord's feet, her grief expressed in stillness rather than action. The bench reads the contrast as consistent character rather than any judgment on either woman, two temperaments meeting the same loss in their own true way.

John 11:21-22

Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died carries no bitterness but real confidence in what his presence would have meant, a grief mixed with unshaken trust rather than accusation. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee reaches for hope even at the graveside, though the bench notes she almost certainly means comfort or some lesser mercy rather than daring to hope for resurrection outright. Her faith is real and yet still short of what Jesus is about to reveal, the pattern the whole scene will follow as he leads her further than she asked.

John 11:23-24

Thy brother shall rise again is deliberately ambiguous, and Martha takes it as the safe, orthodox answer any devout Jew of the Pharisaic persuasion would give, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Her theology is sound and yet distant, a doctrine held about the far future rather than a person trusted for the present moment. The bench reads her answer as setting up exactly the correction Jesus is about to make, moving resurrection from a doctrine to a person standing in front of her.

John 11:25-26

I am the resurrection, and the life: I am the resurrection, and the life is the fifth of the seven predicated I AM sayings, and it corrects Martha's distant future doctrine by relocating resurrection into his own person standing before her. He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live promises life beyond physical death, and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die promises a life the grave cannot touch even now, two distinct assurances for two different fears. Believest thou this presses the doctrine into a personal question, exactly the move from abstract truth to trusted person that the whole conversation has been building toward.

John 11:27

Yea, Lord answers the personal question with a personal yes, and Martha's confession, I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world, matches almost word for word John's own purpose statement at 20:31. The bench reads her confession as one of the highest in the Gospel, offered before the miracle rather than after, faith resting on who he has just claimed to be rather than on a sign yet to be seen. Her answer does not directly address the resurrection question he asked, yet it answers the deeper question underneath it completely.

John 11:28-30

The Master is come, and calleth for thee is spoken secretly, a detail the bench reads as deliberate discretion given the hostile crowd of mourners present, not wanting to provoke a public scene before Jesus was ready for one. Mary's quick response, she arose quickly, and came unto him, matches her sister's own eagerness once the summons reaches her, whatever her stillness in verse twenty. John notes precisely that Jesus was not yet come into the town but remained where Martha had first met him, keeping the encounter outside the village and away from the crowd a little longer still.

John 11:31-32

The Jews who had come to comfort Mary follow her, supposing she goeth unto the grave to weep there, an assumption that inadvertently gathers the very witnesses to the sign whom John will need in the next chapter. Mary falls down at his feet, the same posture Luke records for her devotion at 10:39, and repeats her sister's exact words, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died, the whole household apparently having said this to each other many times over four days of grief. The bench notes Jesus receives the same statement from both sisters yet answers each very differently, meeting Martha's version with doctrine and Mary's with something closer to shared sorrow.

John 11:33-34

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled uses a Greek verb, embrimaomai, that carries real force, closer to a deep, indignant groan than a gentle sigh, and the bench divides over exactly what stirs it, grief at death's grip on a world he made, anger at sin and its wages, or both together. Where have ye laid him asks a question he did not need to ask for information's sake, entering fully into the human process of mourning rather than skipping past it to the miracle. Come and see answers him plainly, an invitation into the grief before it becomes an invitation into the miracle.

John 11:35

Jesus wept: Jesus wept, the shortest verse in the English Bible, uses a different Greek word from the loud groaning of verse thirty-three, dakryo, meaning quiet weeping rather than public lament, tears rather than a cry. The bench reads the shift as significant, a private, personal grief following the earlier public groan of trouble, the two responses together showing the full range of his sorrow. It stands as the clearest single verse in Scripture for the true and full humanity of Christ, grief felt to the point of tears even while resurrection power waits one word away.

John 11:36-37

Behold how he loved him is the crowd's own read of the tears, and the bench notes it is the correct one as far as it goes, though it stops short of grasping who is weeping. John 11:38-39

Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave repeats the deep, troubled emotion of verse thirty-three as he arrives at the cave sealed by a stone, the standard burial arrangement for the wealthier families of Judea. Take ye away the stone meets an objection from the most practical mourner present, Martha, the sister of him that was dead, protesting by this time he stinketh, for he hath been dead four days, a blunt, physical fact offered without embarrassment. The bench reads Martha's protest as proof the miracle to come cannot be explained away as resuscitation of someone merely near death, decomposition already underway by her own testimony.

John 11:40

Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God recalls the promise of verse four, that the sickness was for the glory of God, now brought to the very edge of its fulfillment. The bench notes the promise is conditioned on belief, not because faith causes the miracle mechanically, but because seeing the glory rightly requires the eyes of faith rather than mere curiosity at a spectacle. John 11:41-42

Then they took away the stone, obedience given even without yet seeing the promised glory, and Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me, a prayer of thanksgiving offered before the miracle rather than a petition asking for it. And I knew that thou hearest me always makes plain this constant communion needed no fresh asking, the prayer spoken aloud for the crowd's benefit rather than his own, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. The bench reads the prayer as evidence against any notion that Jesus worked signs by independent power, the raising credited openly to the Father who sent him and always hears him.

John 11:43-44

He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth, and Augustine's often repeated observation is that Jesus named him precisely because a general call to the dead without a name would have emptied every grave. He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes, his face bound about with a napkin, walking while still wrapped, a detail the bench reads as part of the sign's own force, life restored to a body decay had already claimed, not merely resuscitation of one still lightly bound by illness. Loose him, and let him go gives the crowd a small, human part to play in the aftermath of a miracle only Jesus could perform.

John 11:45-46

Many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him shows the sign accomplishing exactly what verse nineteen's detail about the mourners had quietly set up, a public miracle with witnesses ready to carry the report. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done shows the same evidence producing two opposite responses in the same crowd, belief in some and hostile reporting in others. The bench reads the divided response as consistent with the whole Gospel's pattern, the same works never compelling faith apart from the will's own response to them.

John 11:47-48

Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council convenes the Sanhedrin itself, an alliance of two groups usually opposed to each other, Sadducean priests and Pharisees, united now only by a common threat. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation names their real fear plainly, political survival under Rome rather than any theological objection to the sign itself. The bench notes the irony sharply, that the very miracle proving Jesus the resurrection and the life becomes the council's stated reason for plotting his death.

John 11:49-50

Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, cuts through the council's indecision with brutal political calculation, that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. Ye know nothing at all dismisses the council's hesitation as naive, a statement of contempt that nonetheless carries far more truth than Caiaphas himself intends. The bench reads his cynicism as the human motive on the surface while John is about to reveal a far deeper truth working underneath it.

John 11:51-52

This spake he not of himself corrects any reading of Caiaphas as merely a shrewd politician, for being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation, unwitting prophecy flowing from the office rather than the man's own character. And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad extends the prophecy's true meaning far past what Caiaphas intended, reaching the Gentile world the high priest never had in view. The bench treats the moment as one of Scripture's clearest examples of God speaking true words through an unworthy mouth, the office of high priest still carrying a kind of prophetic dignity even in its final corrupted year.

John 11:53-54

Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death marks the point of no return, the seventh sign having provoked not repentance but a formal, deliberate plan. Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, withdrawing to a city called Ephraim near the wilderness, a strategic retreat rather than fear, buying time until the appointed hour for Passover. The bench reads the withdrawal as one more instance of the same sovereignty over timing shown throughout the Gospel, danger real and yet never in control of the actual moment of his death.

John 11:55-57

The Jews' passover was nigh at hand names the third Passover of this Gospel, the one that will end at the cross, and many went up to Jerusalem early to purify themselves according to the customary rites before the feast. Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast shows the crowd's own uncertain speculation, unaware of the manhunt already underway. The chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment that anyone who knew where Jesus was should report it, so that they might take him, the official plot from verse fifty-three now made public policy, setting the stage for the final week the next chapter opens.
