Jeremiah 50:1-3

The oracle opens with Babylon's own gods named and broken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces, the empire's two chief deities toppled in the same breath as her images, the same charge Isaiah levels in almost the same words, Bel boweth down, Nebo stoopeth. Verse 3 names the direction of the blow, a nation out of the north, the same compass point Babylon herself came from against Judah, judgment returning by the road it traveled. The land is left so desolate that both man and beast depart it, the totality the rest of the chapter spells out in detail.

Jeremiah 50:4-9

Babylon's fall opens onto a homecoming: the children of Israel and Judah come together, weeping as they go, asking the way to Zion and binding themselves to the Lord in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten, north and south reunited in the very sentence that describes the return. The cause of the exile is stated first, my people hath been lost sheep, their shepherds have caused them to go astray, the false-shepherd charge chapter 23 already brought now answered in the flock's own confusion. Against that failure comes the call to the exiles themselves, remove out of the midst of Babylon, go forth, be as the he goats before the flocks, leaders now rather than driven strays.

Jeremiah 50:10-20

Chaldea's fall is stated plainly, a spoil for the nations who plundered others, her walls thrown down and her army cut off at harvest time as a reaper cuts a field. Verse 17 folds Israel's whole exile history into one line, a scattered sheep driven first by the lion of Assyria and then broken in the teeth of Nebuchadrezzar's Babylon, the two empires that afflicted the same flock named together. The chapter turns without warning to forgiveness at verse 20, the iniquity of Israel sought for and not found, for I will pardon them whom I reserve, the same full pardon the new covenant of chapter 31 promises tied here to Babylon's own overthrow.

Jeremiah 50:21-27

against the land of Merathaim: Merathaim, double rebellion, and Pekod, visitation, are real Babylonian districts whose names the bench reads as also carrying their Hebrew sense, judgment landing on ground named for the offense it answers. The hammer of the whole earth, Babylon's own image for her power over the nations, is now the thing cut asunder and broken, the oracle turning the empire's boast into her epitaph. The armoury opened and the storehouses cast up as heaps end the unit with soldiers pictured as bullocks led down to slaughter, an army consumed the way it once consumed others.

Jeremiah 50:28-32

Refugees from Babylon carry the news to Zion themselves, and the word they bring names what is being avenged, the vengeance of his temple, Babylon's fall tied directly back to the house she burned. The sentence against her is framed as simple repayment, recompense her according to her work, according to all that she hath done, do unto her, the same measure she used returned to her. The most proud stumbles with none to raise him up, fire kindled in his own cities, pride the ground named twice in three verses.

Jeremiah 50:33-34

Israel and Judah's shared oppression is answered by a title drawn from family law, their Redeemer is strong, the Lord of hosts is his name, the go'el who buys back a kinsman's debt and avenges his blood now applied to the whole nation. He shall throughly plead their cause is a courtroom word, the Lord taking Israel's case as his own rather than leaving it to the nations that wronged her. The same family word underlies Boaz's redemption of Ruth and Job's I know that my redeemer liveth, the bench notes, kinship language stretched to cover a captive people.

Jeremiah 50:35-40

The sword refrain sweeps through Babylon class by class, princes, wise men, horses and chariots, treasures, seven strokes in five verses naming everyone from the court's counselors to its wealth. Verse 38 adds a drought upon her waters, dried up, which later history reads literally, Cyrus's forces diverting the Euphrates to enter the city by its own riverbed, the detail the bench treats as prophecy matched by the event. The comparison to Sodom and Gomorrah at verse 40, no man to abide there, states the permanence of the desolation the same way chapter 49 states it for Edom.

Jeremiah 50:41-46

The invasion language of 6:22-24 returns almost word for word, the same people from the north, the same bow and lance, the same voice roaring like the sea, but daughter of Zion has become daughter of Babylon, the doom Judah once feared now falling on the empire that carried it out. The king of Babylon hears the report and his hands wax feeble exactly as Judah's had, terror measured out to the one who once caused it. The chapter closes on a question no one answers, who is that shepherd that will stand before me?, sovereignty over every king in the oracle resting in the one voice that has been speaking throughout.
