the rabble among them

on Numbers 11:4-6

The craving starts with “the rabble”, the mixed crowd of Exodus 12:38, and the Israelites weep after them. They remember the fish “we ate freely in Egypt”, and Matthew Henry notes the list leaves out the brick kilns, taskmasters and whip.

The Hebrew says their soul is dried up, using nephesh, the word for the whole living self. The food they scorn is the food Psalm 78:24-25 calls grain from heaven and the bread of angels. Matthew Henry names the craving lust.

It may be noticed that the resemblance of the manna to coriander seed was not in the color, but in the size and figure; and from its comparison to bdellium, which is either a drop of white gum or a white pearl, we are enabled to form a better idea of it.
