They, however, received the gifts of the Spirit as well as their brethren. And when Moses was urged to forbid their prophesying, his answer displayed a noble disinterestedness as well as zeal for the glory of God akin to that of our Lord (Mr 9:39).

Eldad and Medad were “among those listed” but stayed in the camp, and the Spirit rested on them there. Matthew Henry calls their principle their praise and their practice their fault, since the order was to come out to the tent.

The prophesying happened in the middle of the camp, where everyone could hear it, and the report reached Moses at a run. The Spirit reached the two men where they stood. Cyril of Jerusalem reads the day as the Spirit working according to his own will.
