Do not be afraid or discouraged
The charge “Be strong and courageous” is the one Joshua was given by Moses at Deuteronomy 31:7 and 31:23 and by God at 1:6 and 1:9. Here alone he hands it on, and he hands it to his commanders. The ground he gives is the sight before them, “for the LORD will do this to all the enemies you fight”.
