The king thereof - No doubt the successor of the king slain at Makkedah Jos 10:23. All the cities thereof - i. e. the smaller towns dependent upon Hebron. The expression marks Hebron as the metropolis of other subject towns.

Hebron is taken here, given to Caleb to take again at 14:12 and 15:14, and taken by Judah at Judges 1:10. Some hold this campaign broke the armies and the towns were reoccupied, and others that the passages record the settling of ground this raid swept.

Hebron's king was among the five killed at Makkedah, so Barnes takes the king struck down here as his successor. The villages are the smaller towns that depended on Hebron. Wesley reads them as the mark of a royal city with towns under it, as Gibeon was in verse 2.
