Which, according to Bunting (d), was eight miles from Libnah, and twenty miles from Jerusalem to the southwest of this city; see Jos 10:5, and encamped against it, and fought against it; for it seems this city stood out, and would not surrender at once, which obliged Joshua to encamp about it, and besiege it. Lachish alone in the run takes two days, and the account slows for it. Its mound is among the most excavated in the land, and its burn layers are part of the unsettled argument over the conquest’s date. Horam king of Gezer comes to relieve it and loses his army.

And again, Lachish is interpreted "way." But in the Scriptures, a way is both a laudable and a culpable thing. That is not difficult to demonstrate, as it says in the psalms, "And the way of the impious will perish"; and in another place, on the contrary, "Make straight the way for your feet." Therefore it can also be understood here that the city of Lachish was at first the way of the impious, and afterwards, when it was destroyed and overthrown, it was won over to the right way with the Israelites reigning.
