Setting a foot on a beaten king’s neck is a known act, carved on Egyptian and Assyrian monuments. Joshua calls the commanders forward to do it. Psalm 110:1 uses the picture of enemies made a footstool, and Hebrews 10:12-13 applies it to Christ at God’s right hand.

Adam Clarke reads the act as a token of victories still to come, and points out Joshua explains it that way in the next verse. Albert Barnes sets it beside 1 Corinthians 15:25. There Paul says Christ must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
