And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book,.... To the captive Jews; and having also said the above words by way of prayer and approbation: that thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates; a river by which Babylon was situated.

on Jeremiah 51:62-64

Seraiah's scripted prayer, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off, that none shall remain in it, turns the reading itself into an act of witness, the word confessed back to the Lord in the city it names. The sign-act completes by drowning: bind a stone to the book, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates, the same river the oracle has already named as Babylon's wealth and her vulnerability, the prophecy published by sinking the way the marred girdle and the shattered bottle published earlier words by ruin. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah closes the collection formally, marking what follows in chapter 52 as a later hand's appendix rather than the prophet's own continuing speech.
