on Deuteronomy 7:6-8
"His prized possession" renders segullah, a king's own treasure held apart from the public store. The Septuagint gives it as laon periousion, the phrase of Titus 2:14. Calvin reads this election as a charge to obedience and a check on pride.

The verse joins the reason for the choice to its proof in history, the mighty hand that redeemed you from the house of slavery. Matthew Henry reads the oath as God making himself a debtor to his own promise.

For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God--that is, set apart to the service of God, or chosen to execute the important purposes of His providence.
But because the Lord loved you - It was no good in them that induced God to choose them at this time to be his peculiar people: he had his reasons, but these sprang from his infinite goodness. He intended to make a full discovery of his goodness to the world, and this must have a commencement in some particular place, and among some people. He chose that time, and he chose the Jewish people; but not because of their goodness or holiness.
