on Deuteronomy 7:22-23
The slow pace has a reason drawn from the ground itself, "the wild animals would multiply around you", and Exodus 23:29-30 gives the same reason. Judges 2:20-23 gives another for the nations left in the land, that God left them to test Israel.

The verse names the means God will use, great confusion thrown among the enemy, and Exodus 23:27 had promised the same ahead of Israel. Joshua 10:10 reports it at Gibeon, where the LORD threw the kings' armies into confusion before Israel.
