Chapter summary
God's answer to Moses' complaint. ‘I am the LORD; and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.’ Seven I-wills thunder across the chapter — I will bring out, I will rid, I will redeem, I will take, I will be, I will bring in, I will give. Israel hearkens not for anguish of spirit and cruel bondage. A genealogy of Reuben, Simeon, and Levi roots the deliverer in the tribal structure of Israel — Moses and Aaron are no interlopers but covenant sons. The promises are named before the plagues begin.
