Arise, and let us flee

on 2 Samuel 15:14-17

David's decision is instant and undefended, flight offered to spare the city rather than any counter-plot against his own son. His servants answer with plain readiness at verse 15, and the king leaves ten concubines behind to keep the house, a detail left unexplained here that returns with its full weight at 16:22. The exodus itself, king and household going out on foot while the city watches, is the moment the reigning king becomes for a season an exile among his own people again.

John Gill notes the verb means choose, so the servants leave the whole decision to David, whether to stand and fight or to leave the city. Their loyalty holds while the tribes waver. Matthew Henry remarks that the best man does not always make the best figure.

Hebron - This place he chose as being an eminent city, and next to Jerusalem, the chief of the tribe of Judah, and the place where his father began his kingdom, which he took for a good omen. And where it is probable he had secured many friends. It was also at a convenient distance from Jerusalem.
And the king's servants said unto the king,.... In answer to him, and to show that they were quite conformable to his pleasure: behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shalt appoint; or "choose" (k), whether to prepare to fight, and defend him and the city, or to depart and make their escape. (k) יבחר "elegerit", Pagninus, Montanus, Junius & Tremellius, Piscator.
