Mark6chapter 6

Mark 6:1-2

Jesus returns to Nazareth with his disciples now following him as an established rabbi, and the synagogue crowd is astonished at wisdom and mighty works they cannot reconcile with the man they think they already know. Their question, from whence hath this man these things, is not disbelief in the works themselves but disbelief that this particular man could be their source. The bench reads the whole scene as familiarity breeding a peculiar kind of blindness, wonder curdling into offense within the space of two verses.

Mark 6:3

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary names Jesus by his trade and, unusually for the culture, by his mother rather than his father, a detail the commentators read as evidence Joseph was likely already dead by this point in the story. James, Joses, Juda, and Simon are named as his brothers, and the sisters are mentioned though not named, the plainest reading being actual siblings born to Mary after Jesus, a reading the bench states honestly alongside the alternative that later tradition holds. They were offended at him: the very familiarity that should have commended him became the reason for rejecting him.

Mark 6:4-6

A prophet is not without honour save in his own country becomes proverbial precisely because Jesus lived it, honored everywhere except among his own kin and in his own house. Mark's blunt report that he could there do no mighty work, save laying hands on a few sick folk, ties the limitation to their unbelief rather than to any lack of power in him, and the bench is careful to read it as a statement about reception, not capacity. He marvelled because of their unbelief, one of only two things Mark ever records Jesus marveling at, unbelief and great faith both drawing his wonder.

Mark 6:7

The twelve are called and sent out two by two, a pattern the commentators read as both practical and legal, companionship for the road and two witnesses for any testimony given along the way. Power over unclean spirits is given before any word is spoken about preaching, the authority preceding the assignment itself. This first sending anticipates the church's own later practice of sending workers out in pairs.

Mark 6:8-9

No bread, no money, no scrip, only a staff and the sandals already on their feet: the instructions strip away every ordinary provision so the mission depends visibly on the hospitality God would supply through those who received them. The bench notes a slight difference in wording from the parallel Gospels and reads it as two evangelists reporting the same austere charge rather than a contradiction. The point is not poverty for its own sake but urgency, a mission too pressing to wait on preparation.

Mark 6:10-11

Staying put in the first house that receives them protects the twelve from village gossip about seeking better lodging, and it keeps the mission simple, one household, one base, no shopping for comfort. Shaking off the dust for a testimony against a town that refuses them is a practice normally reserved for leaving Gentile territory, so applying it to Israelite towns is itself a solemn charge, treating an unreceptive town as outside the covenant's welcome. The comparison to Sodom and Gomorrha raises the stakes further, refusing the gospel weighed as graver than the sin that destroyed those cities.

Mark 6:12-13

The message matches John the Baptist's own and Jesus' own opening proclamation, repentance, and the twelve's works match his, devils cast out and the sick anointed with oil and healed. This is the New Testament's first mention of anointing with oil for healing, later taken up again at James 5:14, and the commentators read it here as a physical sign accompanying the spoken word rather than a medicine in itself. Word and work travel together in the apostles' mission exactly as they had in the sender's own ministry.

Mark 6:14-16

Mark now opens the flashback that fills the middle of the chapter, wrapped around the mission of the twelve exactly as the Jairus story wrapped around the woman with the issue of blood earlier in the Gospel, each interpreting the other, a king's guilty conscience set against the disciples' bold, unburdened preaching. Herod's own theory that John is risen betrays a conscience that cannot let the murder rest, and the popular guesses, Elias or a prophet, show a people already primed to recognize resurrection and prophetic return as live categories. Herod's flat conclusion, it is John, whom I beheaded, closes the paragraph before the narrative doubles back to tell how.

Mark 6:17-18

Herodias was already married to Herod's brother Philip when Herod took her, a plain violation of the law's own prohibition on marrying a brother's wife while he lived, and John's rebuke names it to Herod's face rather than only behind his back. The bench reads John's courage here as continuous with his wilderness preaching, the same directness that named sin plainly now aimed at a king. Prison is the cost of speaking truth to power without softening it.

Mark 6:19-20

Herodias wants John dead and cannot get her way while Herod himself both fears John as a just and holy man and, strangely, hears him gladly, protecting the very prisoner whose word convicts him. The bench reads Herod's divided state as a study in a conscience that enjoys hearing truth without ever intending to obey it, observed him carrying the sense of a man watching a threat he cannot bring himself to release. Herodias supplies the will Herod lacks; the birthday feast will supply her the occasion.

Mark 6:21-23

A convenient day arrives at last, a birthday feast for the court's high captains and chief men of Galilee, and Herodias's daughter dances before the company and pleases Herod enough to draw a rash, public oath, whatsoever thou wilt, unto the half of my kingdom. The bench reads the oath as vanity performing before an audience of nobles, a king who will not lose face before his guests even at another's expense. The scene is set entirely by pride and appetite, with no thought yet given to what will actually be asked.

Mark 6:24-25

The head of John the Baptist: The daughter runs to her mother rather than deciding for herself, and Herodias answers instantly, proof she had been waiting for exactly this opening. She returns with haste and sharpens the request beyond her mother's wording, by and by, in a charger, a grim demand for the head served like a course at the feast. The bench notes the girl's own eagerness, adding urgency her mother had not specified, a detail Mark preserves without softening.

Mark 6:26-28

Herod's sorrow is real and entirely too late, a conscience registering the horror of what his own oath now compels while his real motive, for their sakes which sat with him, is named plainly: he would rather kill a righteous man than look weak before dinner guests. The execution happens in the prison itself, off scene, and John's head is carried to the girl on a platter and passed to her mother, the trophy Herodias had wanted from the start. The bench reads the sequence as a case study in how careless oaths and social pressure together produce evil that private conscience alone would never have chosen.

Mark 6:29

John's own disciples, not the twelve, recover his body and give it decent burial, the last act of loyalty this Gospel records for them. The bench reads their care as continuous with the honor John's ministry had earned even from those who did not follow Jesus, and the flashback closes here, the narrative returning to the twelve and to Jesus in the very next verse.

Mark 6:30-31

The apostles return and report everything they had done and taught, and Jesus answers their exhaustion with an invitation to rest rather than a further assignment, come ye yourselves apart and rest a while. Mark's detail that there were many coming and going, with no leisure so much as to eat, is the eyewitness's own memory of ministry's relentless pace. The bench reads this as the Lord's pastoral care for his workers, rest offered before it is demanded and before it is forced by exhaustion.

Mark 6:32-34

The planned retreat by boat fails the moment the crowds recognize where they are headed and outrun the boat on foot along the shore, so that Jesus steps out of the boat to find the very crowd he had tried to leave behind waiting for him. Rather than resentment at the interruption, he is moved with compassion, sheep without a shepherd, the same image the prophets use for a leaderless and exploited people, and he answers their need with more teaching before any thought of feeding them. The bench reads his compassion as the hinge that turns an interrupted rest into the feeding miracle that follows.

Mark 6:35-36

The disciples read the practical problem accurately, a desert place, the day far spent, and no food for so large a crowd, and their proposed solution is sensible, send them away to buy their own bread in the surrounding villages. The bench notes the disciples are not wrong about the facts, only about what Jesus intends to do with them; their arithmetic is correct and their faith is about to be tested against it.

Mark 6:37-38

Give ye them to eat answers the disciples' sensible plan with an impossible command, and their reply, two hundred pennyworth of bread would not suffice, states the mathematics of the problem honestly, roughly eight months' wages for a laborer and still not enough. How many loaves have ye, go and see sends them to take an inventory before the miracle, five loaves and two fishes, the small provision every Gospel account of this miracle preserves. The bench reads the command to search out what little they have as the pattern of every miracle of provision, God working from what is offered rather than from nothing.

Mark 6:39-40

The green grass is Mark's own detail, an eyewitness's memory placing the scene in springtime, and the orderly seating in companies of hundreds and fifties turns a hungry crowd into a countable, organized assembly before a single loaf is broken. The bench reads the ranks as deliberate, easing the distribution and letting Mark, through Peter's own memory, actually count the men fed. Order precedes provision throughout the scene.

Mark 6:41-42

Jesus takes the five loaves and two fishes, looks up to heaven, blesses, and breaks, the same fourfold action, take, bless, break, give, that he will repeat at the last supper, and the disciples themselves distribute what his hands multiply, a detail every account keeps. The bench reads the heavenward look as the acknowledgment that the increase comes from the Father, not from any trick of the loaves themselves. They did all eat, and were filled: satisfaction, not mere survival, is the miracle's own measure of itself.

Mark 6:43-44

Twelve baskets of fragments gathered afterward, one for each disciple who had just doubted the loaves could feed anyone, is read by the commentators as a rebuke turned into a gift, abundance left over precisely where scarcity had been assumed. About five thousand men is Mark's count of the men alone, women and children uncounted alongside them by the custom of the day, so the true number fed was considerably larger still. The bench reads the surplus as proof against any theory of a shared-lunch miracle explained away by embarrassed generosity, twelve baskets is not the residue of mere social pressure.

Mark 6:45-46

Straightway he constrained his disciples into the boat, a stronger word than a simple request, and the parallel Gospel accounts supply the reason this passage leaves out, the crowd's intent to make him king by force after a miracle of bread. Sending the people away himself, Jesus goes up the mountain alone to pray, the only recorded prayer retreat in this whole busy chapter, coming immediately after the day's greatest public acclaim. The bench reads the timing as deliberate, prayer sought hardest at the exact moment popularity was at its peak and its dangers greatest.

Mark 6:47-48

Evening finds the disciples straining at the oars against a contrary wind while Jesus remains alone on land, watching them toil from a distance before coming to them walking on the sea about the fourth watch, the hour just before dawn. The bench reads and would have passed by them as intentional testing rather than indifference, the same pattern as the sleeping Lord in an earlier storm, a delay that draws out the disciples' own faith or its absence. Walking on the water is presented as an act of the same creative authority that had already stilled the sea outright.

Mark 6:49-50

Supposing him a spirit, the disciples cry out in terror, a fear the bench reads as evidence they were not expecting any such appearance and had no category ready for it. Jesus answers immediately with a threefold word, be of good cheer, it is I, be not afraid, the middle phrase carrying in the Greek the same construction used for the divine name, I am, spoken here over a raging sea just as it will be spoken again at his arrest. The self-identification does the calming before any command is even given to the wind.

Mark 6:51-52

Jesus enters the ship and the wind ceases at once, and the disciples are sore amazed beyond measure, Mark's own intensified vocabulary for a wonder that outstrips their previous experience of him. The explanation Mark gives is blunt and unflattering to the twelve, they considered not the miracle of the loaves, for their heart was hardened, the same word used of Pharaoh's heart, tying their slowness of understanding to hardening rather than mere forgetfulness. The bench reads Mark's honesty here as characteristic of a Gospel drawn from Peter's own preaching, unsparing toward the very men telling the story.

Mark 6:53-54

The crossing lands them at Gennesaret rather than Bethsaida, the original destination, the detour itself an unremarked evidence of an eyewitness's memory of an ordinary night gone differently than planned. They are recognized straightway, the same immediate recognition that had met them at Capernaum, a district by now thoroughly familiar with Jesus and eager for him.

Mark 6:55-56

The whole region runs to bring the sick on their beds wherever word comes that Jesus is present, laying them in the streets of villages, cities, and countryside alike, a scene of organized, urgent faith rather than random crowding. Touching but the border of his garment recalls the woman with the issue of blood earlier in the Gospel, and the chapter closes with the same principle proven at scale, as many as touched him were made whole. The bench reads the chapter's final verse as summary rather than single incident, months of ministry compressed into one sweeping sentence of healing.
