Isaiah 44:1-3

Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant: Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant opens the chapter on the same servant language that named Israel through the trial of chapter 43, formed thee from the womb reaching back to before birth for the ground of the promise. Fear not repeats a third time in two chapters, now paired with a name found nowhere else in Scripture, Jesurun, which the older writers read as an affectionate name for the upright one. Verse 3 promises water for the thirsty and my spirit upon thy seed together, the Spirit's outpouring set beside physical relief for a people about to be scattered no longer, which Delitzsch and Barnes both connect forward to the later prophets' fuller Spirit promises.

Isaiah 44:4-6

as willows by the water courses: They shall spring up as among the grass extends the watering of verse 3 into a picture of growth, willows planted by a stream having no want of water to spread by. Verse 5 shows the effect on identity itself, one saying I am the Lord's, another naming himself by Jacob, another writing the Lord's name on his own hand, three ways of claiming the covenant that the older writers read as proselytes joining Israel as much as Israel's own sons returning. Verse 6 states the claim the rest of the chapter will test against the idols, I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God, the same exclusivity the trial of chapter 43 already argued.

Isaiah 44:7-8

since I appointed the ancient people: Who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it reopens the trial with a direct challenge, no other claimant able to set events in order since the ancient people were first appointed. Fear ye not, neither be afraid returns the chapter to its opening comfort even inside the courtroom, and ye are even my witnesses repeats the refrain of chapter 43 a fourth time across the two chapters. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any states the verdict the idol satire that follows will illustrate rather than argue, the bench reading verses 9 through 20 as the trial's own exhibit of what a false claimant looks like.

Isaiah 44:9-11

They that make a graven image are all of them vanity: They that make a graven image are all of them vanity opens the satire proper, the makers themselves called witnesses against their own work, they see not, nor know, a deliberate echo of the true witnesses just named in verse 8. Verse 11 gathers every workman together to stand and answer for what they made, and promises only shame for the whole trade, not one craftsman singled out but the craft itself put on trial. Gill reads the summons as the same courtroom already opened at verse 7, now turned to hear the defense a false god cannot offer.

Isaiah 44:12-17

The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals: The smith with the tongs and the carpenter with his rule and compass are described at length, real trades exactly rendered, and the satire's edge is that the smith grows hungry and faint making a god that cannot feed him. The carpenter fells a cedar or a cypress or plants an ash and lets the rain grow it, the same tree serving two uses the verses lay side by side without comment. He burns part of the very same log to warm himself and bake his bread, and carves the residue into a god before which he falls down and prays, Deliver me; for thou art my god, the wood not changing though its use has. Barnes reads the flat listing of both uses in one breath as the sharpest irony in the whole satire, sharper than any direct accusation could be.

Isaiah 44:18-20

for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see: They have not known nor understood names the idol-maker's blindness as itself a judgment, for he hath shut their eyes, the same hardening language chapter 6 first pronounced over the nation now turned on the craftsman's own trade. None considereth in his heart to ask the plain question the satire has been building toward, shall I fall down to the stock of a tree, a question so obvious the text treats its absence as the real strangeness. He feedeth on ashes closes the unit as the satire's sharpest line, a man sustained by what a fire has already consumed, a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul. Henry reads the whole workshop scene as evidence entered in the trial the earlier verses opened, proof by demonstration rather than by argument.

Isaiah 44:21-22

Remember these, O Jacob and Israel: Remember these, O Jacob and Israel turns the satire's evidence back on the servant it was given for, thou art my servant repeated twice in one verse against the idol who serves no one. I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions answers verse 20's ash-fed heart with a heart that can be forgiven, the same blotting out already promised at 43:25 now pictured as a cloud dispersed rather than an image erased. Return unto me; for I have redeemed thee makes the forgiveness an invitation rather than a bare declaration, the servant summoned home.

Isaiah 44:23

Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it: Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it calls creation itself to celebrate a redemption not yet visible to Jacob's own eyes, mountains and forest and every tree named in a doxology answering the idol-maker's silent trees of the verses just before. The Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel joins the nation's rescue to God's own glory as one act rather than two, the pattern the whole book repeats from the trial of the nations onward. Delitzsch reads the verse as the hinge between the forgiveness just promised and the creation claims that follow, praise standing between two proofs of the same power.

Isaiah 44:24-26

that stretcheth forth the heavens alone: I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone renews the creation claim in the first person, alone standing against every idol just described as a joint labor of smith and carpenter and tree. Verse 25 turns the same power against false prediction, frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad, the diviners of Babylon named without naming them, their trade undone by the God who alone declares the future. Verse 26 confirms the word of his servant, most naturally read of Isaiah's own prophecy, and applies the same confirming word to Jerusalem's rebuilding, thou shalt be inhabited, spoken while the city still stood.

Isaiah 44:27-28

That saith to the deep, Be dry: That saith to the deep, Be dry names a drying of waters the older writers read toward the Euphrates diverted the night Babylon fell, the same power over water the exodus and the wilderness crossings already displayed. Verse 28 names Cyrus outright for the first time in the book, verified: that saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure, a foreign king called shepherd of a people not his own before he was born. The verse states the temple's foundation as still to be laid, thy foundation shall be laid, which the traditional dating reads as prophecy spoken generations before Cyrus's decree and the later-dating position reads as written nearer the event, a dispute the evidence lane names honestly rather than settles.
