on Deuteronomy 3:8-10
The territory is measured by its edges, "from the Arnon Valley as far as Mount Hermon", the whole east side of the Jordan. Verse 9 gives the mountain's other names, Sirion among the Sidonians and Senir among the Amorites, and Psalm 29:6 uses Sirion. Albert Barnes points out that Hermon carried Baal sanctuaries and was a religious centre of old Syria, known to several nations by their own names.

Since he must not live to see the completing of their victory and settlement, God thus gives him a specimen of it. Thus the Spirit is given to those that believe as the earnest of their inheritance, until the redemption of the purchased possession.
