Chapter summary
Balak and Balaam. Balak king of Moab, seeing what Israel has done to the Amorites, sends for Balaam son of Beor to curse Israel. The LORD says go not; Balak sends more honourable princes with higher fees; Balaam is told, ‘if the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do’. God's anger is kindled because he goes; the angel of the LORD stands in the way with sword drawn; the ass sees the angel three times, pressing Balaam's foot against a wall, turning aside, lying down. Balaam strikes the ass; the LORD opens her mouth. The angel opens Balaam's eyes.
