Jonathan's account matches the narrator's own report of verses thirty-eight and thirty-nine point for point, Zadok, Nathan, Benaiah, the king's mule, the anointing at Gihon. He adds that Solomon already sitteth on the throne of the kingdom, present tense, the crisis resolved before Adonijah's feast has finished its meal. A single eyewitness report ends a rebellion that speeches and oaths alone could not have stopped in time.

The arrival of a trusty messenger, who gave a full detail of the coronation ceremony [1Ki 1:43-48], spread dismay in their camp. The wicked and ambitious plot they had assembled to execute was dissipated, and every one of the conspirators consulted his safety by flight. ADONIJAH, FLEEING TO THE HORNS OF THE ALTAR, IS DISMISSED BY SOLOMON.
