The phrase “making a house” means “continuing the posterity” of a person, and, in the case of a royal person, “maintaining his descendants upon the throne.”

Solomon hears the request as a claim on the throne, the reading 2 Samuel 16:20-22 gave Absalom's act. Adonijah's word, that the kingship came from the LORD, is answered by the LORD “who founded for me a dynasty as He promised”. Benaiah carries out the sentence the same day.

The Hebrew behind dynasty is house. Albert Barnes explains making a house as keeping a man's descendants on the throne. Matthew Henry reads the oath as a pledge that the LORD who established Solomon will also remove those who would unsettle his throne.

"As God liveth, that establisheth the government, Adonijah shall die, that would unsettle it." Thus the ruin of the enemies of Christ's kingdom is as sure as the stability of his kingdom, and both are as sure as the being and life of God, the founder of it.

God do so to me, and more also--the common form of introducing a solemn oath. if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life--Whether there was a treasonable design to conceal under this request or not, the act, according to Eastern notions, was criminal, and of dangerous consequence to the state.
