Matthew 27:1-2

When the morning was come, the chief priests and elders convene a formal session to finalize the death sentence already decided the night before, since Jewish process required daylight for a capital verdict to stand. They deliver Jesus bound to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, because occupied Judea had stripped the Sanhedrin of the power to execute, a limitation John's Gospel states outright at John 18:31. The morning march from Caiaphas's house to the Praetorium begins the day the Nicene Creed will forever tie to Pilate's name, the exact link between the eternal Son and a dateable Roman official.

Matthew 27:3-5

Judas sees Jesus condemned and is seized with remorse, a word the Greek distinguishes from repentance proper, metamelomai rather than metanoia, sorrow for the deed's outcome rather than a turning to God over it. He confesses in the plainest words in the Gospel, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood, and gets back only the priests' cold see thou to that, the very men who bought the betrayal refusing to own its weight. Casting the silver into the temple and going out to hang himself, Judas opens the blood thread the chapter will not let go of until Pilate washes his own hands of the same charge.

Matthew 27:6-8

The chief priests refuse to return the silver to the temple treasury on a scruple of ceremonial law, since it is the price of blood, even while the greater blood price they arranged troubles them not at all, and the bench reads the irony as Matthew's own, deliberate and unremarked. With money they cannot keep clean they buy the potter's field as a burial ground for strangers, and the field earns a second name, Aceldama in Acts 1:19's Aramaic, the field of blood, a name Matthew says stood unto this day, meaning still at the time he wrote. Judas's silver, refused by the temple, ends up purchasing a grave for the very Gentiles the temple would not have inside its own courts.

Matthew 27:9-10

The citation attributed to Jeremy the prophet actually gives the content of Zechariah 11:12-13, the thirty pieces of silver cast to the potter in the house of the Lord, and the difficulty carries three standing answers rather than one settled resolution. Some hold that Jewish scrolls of the era opened the Prophets with Jeremiah, so a citation from anywhere in that scroll could carry his name; others point to Jeremiah 19 and 32, where a potter and a purchased field for silver both appear, and read Matthew as weaving Zechariah's wording through Jeremiah's imagery. The honest minority answer, held by Jerome among others, is that the attribution is simply a very old copying difficulty with no full resolution recovered, and the exposition leaves the question open rather than forcing a verdict Scripture itself does not settle.

Matthew 27:11-14

Pilate's opening question goes straight to the political charge the Sanhedrin needed to bring, since blasphemy meant nothing to Rome but treason did, and Jesus' answer, Thou sayest, is a Jewish idiom of qualified affirmation, yes, though not in the sense you intend. To the pile of accusations that follow he answers nothing, and Pilate marvels greatly at a silence no defendant facing death ordinarily offers, the bench reading it against Isaiah 53:7, as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. The man who spoke three years of parables and sermons now speaks almost nothing at the one trial that will kill him.

Matthew 27:15-18

The Passover amnesty custom, unmentioned outside the Gospels but consistent with known Roman practice of clemency at festivals, hands the crowd an actual choice between two prisoners. Barabbas's name means son of the father, bar-abba, and some manuscripts preserve his first name as Jesus too, so the crowd is asked, with an irony the earliest readers surely felt, whether they want Jesus son of the father or Jesus called Christ, the true Son of the Father. Pilate himself already knows the true cause is envy, not treason, and states so plainly in verse 18, the one Roman in the narrative who reads the priests correctly and acts on it not at all.

Matthew 27:19

Pilate's wife interrupts the trial with a message built on a single night's dream, the sixth and last of the book's dreams after the five that guarded the infant Jesus, and this one testifies from an unexpected mouth, a pagan Roman woman rather than an angel or a Jewish father. Her plea, have thou nothing to do with that just man, uses the same word for just, dikaios, that returns in Pilate's own hand washing five verses later, so innocence is stated twice before the verdict, once by a dream and once by the judge himself. Early church tradition, unverifiable but old, gave her the name Procula and later counted her among the saints of the Eastern church for this one act of witness.

Matthew 27:20-23

The chief priests and elders work the crowd while Pilate works the choice, and the multitude that days earlier may have cried Hosanna now cries for Barabbas and then for crucifixion, the same word Luke's Palm Sunday crowd used turned entirely around. Pilate's question, what evil hath he done, receives no answer at all, only a louder repetition of the demand, and the bench reads the scene as mob logic overtaking process in front of a governor who already knows the man is innocent. Let him be crucified, repeated twice, becomes the crowd's whole argument, since a chant does not need to be true to prevail against a Roman more afraid of a riot than of injustice.

Matthew 27:24-25

Pilate's hand washing borrows a Jewish ritual of innocence from Deuteronomy 21:6-7, used there over an unsolved murder, and the governor performs it publicly to shift the verdict's weight onto the crowd even as he is the one man present with actual power to stop the execution. The crowd's answer, his blood be on us, and on our children, is a self-imprecation the text confines to the men and women physically present that day, the same generation Jesus elsewhere addresses directly at 23:36, and the exposition does not extend it past its own scope to a people across later centuries, a reading history has already abused. The same blood the crowd invokes in judgment is named five verses later at 26:28 as shed for the remission of sins, so the verse that sounds like a curse sits directly beside the Gospel's own offer of mercy through that identical blood.

Matthew 27:26

Roman scourging, the flagellum studded with bone or metal, was severe enough on its own record to kill a man before crucifixion began, and Pilate orders it here as the standard preliminary to the cross rather than a substitute for it, though Luke and John show him first hoping the scourging alone might satisfy the crowd. Barabbas is released exactly as the crowd asked, a guilty man walking free while an innocent one is taken to die in his place, a substitution the whole Gospel has been building toward since 1:21, he shall save his people from their sins. The chapter's political trial ends here in two sentences of narrative; its physical ordeal is only beginning.

Matthew 27:27-31

The whole band, a cohort of up to six hundred men, crowds around Jesus for a piece of soldiers' theater that mocks every royal insignia he is never given honestly: a scarlet robe standing for purple, a plaited crown of thorns standing for gold, a reed for a scepter, and a mock homage, bowing the knee, Hail, King of the Jews. The spitting and the blows to the head answer, though Matthew does not cite it here, the pattern Isaiah 50:6 already laid down centuries earlier, I hid not my face from shame and spitting. When the mockery ends they dress him again in his own clothes, and the same soldiers who staged the joke now lead the real king to the real death the joke pretended at.

Matthew 27:32

Roman law allowed a soldier to compel any bystander into a single mile of forced labor, the same power behind Jesus' own teaching at 5:41, and here the soldiers use it on a passing North African Jew named Simon, pressed into carrying the crossbeam Jesus himself, weakened past the scourging, can no longer bear alone. Mark 15:21 preserves the detail that Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus, names apparently known to Mark's first readers, which many take as a sign Simon's family later entered the church his son's cross first touched by force rather than by choice. Cyrene, in modern Libya, had a large Jewish population and likely sent Simon to Jerusalem as a Passover pilgrim who found himself carrying an unplanned cross that morning.

Matthew 27:33-34

a place called Golgotha: Golgotha, place of a skull, likely takes its name from the hill's shape or from the executions it regularly hosted rather than from any relic tradition, and the two chief candidates, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Garden Tomb, both sit outside the first century city wall as the law required. The vinegar mingled with gall was a customary narcotic mercy some Jerusalem women funded for the condemned, Mark calling it myrrh instead of gall, likely two names for one bitter mixture, and Jesus tastes it and refuses it, choosing to meet the cross with an unclouded mind rather than the numbing the custom offered. The refusal answers Psalm 69:21 by inversion, they gave me gall for my meat, and stands as the Gospel's quiet witness that nothing about what follows will be endured half aware.

Matthew 27:35

Crucifixion itself Matthew states in a single clause, and parted his garments, casting lots, receiving all the narrative weight instead, because the fulfillment formula fixes the reader's attention on Psalm 22:18, they parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots, a psalm of David written centuries before crucifixion existed as a Roman practice yet describing its details with exactness. John 19:23-24 fills in the mechanics the citation assumes, four soldiers dividing the outer garments and casting lots only for the inner coat, woven without a seam, rather than tearing it. Psalm 22 opens with the very cry Jesus will voice eleven verses from now, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me, so the soldiers gambling at the foot of the cross are unknowingly acting out a psalm whose opening line the dying man above them is about to speak.

Matthew 27:36-37

The guard sits to watch, a standard precaution against rescue attempts or a hastened death by mercy, while above the cross the soldiers fix the titulus, the official charge board Roman practice required at every execution. John 19:20 records it in three languages, Hebrew, Greek and Latin, so the whole city, its Jewish residents, its Greek-speaking world, and Rome itself could read the same words, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Pilate meant the sign as an insult against the priests who had forced his hand, and the priests asked him to soften it to a mere claim rather than a title, John 19:21-22 records, but Pilate refuses, leaving the truest confession in the whole trial nailed above the very man it names.

Matthew 27:38

Two thieves, likely revolutionary bandits rather than simple robbers given the Greek lestai, the same word some manuscripts use of Barabbas's own crime and Josephus uses of the insurrectionists Rome crucified by the hundreds, hang one on each side of Jesus. The placement fulfills Isaiah 53:12, he was numbered with the transgressors, a detail Luke 22:37 has Jesus cite of himself the night before as Scripture that must be accomplished in him. Luke's fuller account records one thief turning to faith in the final hours, though Matthew's terser telling here shows both still joining the general reviling of verse 44.

Matthew 27:39-44

The passersby's mockery twists Jesus' own words from 26:61 into an accusation, Thou that destroyest the temple, missing that he had spoken of the temple of his body, John 2:19-21 explaining what the false witnesses at his trial had already garbled. The chief priests add their own taunt, he saved others, himself he cannot save, a sentence the bench reads as gospel truth spoken in scorn, since the very reason he will not save himself is that saving others required it. Their final line, let him come down from the cross, and we will believe him, sets the terms of a sign they had already refused at 12:38-39, and even the crucified thieves beside him, men with nothing left to lose, join the same reviling.

Matthew 27:45

Three hours of darkness at midday, from the sixth hour to the ninth, noon to three in the afternoon, cannot be a natural eclipse since Passover fell at full moon when the moon stands opposite the sun, so the bench reads it as a direct divine act rather than an astronomical coincidence some ancient writers tried to explain away. The darkness answers Amos 8:9, I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and darken the earth in the clear day, a prophecy of judgment now falling in the very hour Israel's own judgment is being borne by her King. Creation itself seems to hide its face at the sight, the same instinct that soon tears the temple veil and splits the rocks in the same chapter's next verses.

Matthew 27:46-49

The cry is Psalm 22:1 in Jesus' own spoken Aramaic, preserved by Matthew in the original sounds before he translates it, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me, and the bench reads it not as a loss of faith, since he still cries My God twice, but as the real weight of standing as sin for us, 2 Corinthians 5:21's own phrase, meeting a real and not merely felt withdrawal. The bystanders mishear Eli as a call for Elias, Elijah, whose return Malachi 4:5 promised before the great day of the Lord, and the confusion produces the crude spectacle of soldiers wetting a sponge with vinegar while others wait to see if the prophet will actually appear. The mockery and the misunderstanding both miss that Elijah's forerunner had already come and gone in John the Baptist, 17:12 having already said so.

Matthew 27:50

Jesus dies with a loud voice rather than the silence of a man simply overcome, a detail all three synoptics preserve and the centurion below will react to directly, since ordinary crucifixion deaths came only after the body had grown too weak to make any sound at all. The Greek phrase for gave up his spirit carries an active sense the commentators press, that death here is dismissed rather than merely suffered, matching his own earlier claim at John 10:18, no man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. The moment closes the chapter's longest single scene and opens straight into the signs that follow, the veil, the earthquake, the opened graves, as if creation had been waiting on this one breath.

Matthew 27:51-53

The veil separating the Holy of Holies is torn from the top down, the direction itself excluding a human hand, and the bench reads it as God's own act opening the way Hebrews 10:19-20 later calls the new and living way into the holiest by the blood of Jesus. The earthquake splits rocks and opens graves in the same moment, and Matthew alone among the Gospels records the strange detail that follows, bodies of sleeping saints raised and appearing in Jerusalem after his resurrection, a resurrection firstfruits the bench largely reads as a preview rather than the general resurrection itself, 1 Corinthians 15:20 naming Christ that same firstfruits. Ancient sources report unusual portents around this general period, offered here as evidence context rather than as confirmation the text needs.

Matthew 27:54

Truly this was the Son of God: The centurion in charge of the execution detail, a professional soldier who had likely overseen many crucifixions and knew exactly what an ordinary death by that method looked like, reads the earthquake and the manner of the death together and reaches the confession every human witness in the chapter has been groping toward. Truly this was the Son of God echoes the very charge the chief priests mocked at verse 43, he said, I am the Son of God, so a Gentile soldier now affirms in earnest what Jewish leaders had just thrown back in scorn. Luke 23:47 records him instead calling Jesus righteous, dikaios, likely both statements from one man in one moment, the political verdict and the theological one arriving together.

Matthew 27:55-56

Many women watch from a distance, named here as Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children, Salome by comparison with Mark 15:40, women Luke 8:2-3 records had followed and materially supported Jesus' ministry since Galilee. Their presence at the cross when every named male disciple but John has fled stands as the chapter's own quiet correction to any assumption that courage ran only one direction among the twelve. The same women reappear at the tomb in the verses just ahead and again on resurrection morning, making them the one continuous thread of human witness across the whole passion and the whole first Easter.

Matthew 27:57-60

Joseph of Arimathea, a rich man and by John 19:38's fuller account a secret disciple for fear of the Jews, finds unexpected courage once Jesus is dead and requests the body directly from Pilate, a request only a man of some standing could safely make of a Roman governor. Isaiah 53:9 had said he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, and Joseph's new, unused, rock-hewn tomb fulfills the second half of that pairing exactly, since a criminal's body would ordinarily have gone to a common grave for the executed. Mark 15:43 adds that Joseph was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, and John 19:39 has Nicodemus join him with a hundred pound weight of spices, so two members of the Sanhedrin, men who had likely never voted for the sentence, give Jesus the honorable burial his enemies would have denied him.

Matthew 27:61

Two named women stay at the tomb after Joseph departs, sitting over against the sepulchre in the last light of the day before Sabbath rest begins at sundown, marking exactly where the body was laid so they can return with spices as soon as the Sabbath ends. Their vigil is deliberately noted, since the same two women in verse 56 and the guard set in the following verses both establish, from opposite sides, that no one could later claim the wrong tomb was found empty. Their watching here becomes the reason they are the very first to arrive on Sunday morning in the next chapter.

Matthew 27:62-64

The next day is itself notable, since it falls on the Sabbath, and the chief priests and Pharisees, men usually careful of Sabbath travel and business, set aside their own scruple to secure a guard against a rumor they publicly deny yet privately fear enough to act on. They remember Jesus' resurrection prediction with more precision than the disciples themselves seem to at this point, quoting after three days I will rise again nearly word for word, an irony the bench does not let pass unremarked. Their request to make the sepulchre sure until the third day unintentionally guarantees the very proof of an empty tomb no natural explanation will later be able to answer.

Matthew 27:65-66

Pilate's answer, ye have a watch, likely refers the priests to their own temple guard rather than assigning Roman soldiers, though the Greek permits either reading and the bench holds both open since chapter 28 will call the same men soldiers and have them report to the chief priests rather than to Pilate. The stone is sealed with an official cord and wax impression that made any tampering instantly visible, and a guard, whether temple or Roman, is posted to watch it, so human precaution closes the chapter with every possible safeguard in place against exactly the outcome the next chapter will open with. The very security measures meant to keep the story from being told become, in the event, part of the evidence for it.
