Luke 24:1-3

very early in the morning: Upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women return to the sepulchre with the spices they had prepared, only to find the stone rolled away and the body of the Lord Jesus gone. Luke's careful chronology, the same women who watched the burial at 23:55-56 now first at the empty tomb, ties the two scenes together as eyewitness testimony rather than separate reports, precisely the method he promised in his preface at 1:1-4. The first day of the week becomes the church's day of worship from this moment forward, a change so deep it is never explained, only assumed by the rest of the New Testament.

Luke 24:4-5

As the women stand perplexed, two men in shining garments appear beside them, and the women bow their faces to the earth in fear, and the men ask, Why seek ye the living among the dead. Luke's two men, understood by the whole tradition as angels given human form for the encounter, match John's account of two angels seen inside the tomb, while Matthew and Mark speak of one, a difference the bench resolves without strain by the ordinary rule that where two are present, one may be the sole speaker a shorter account records. The angels' question itself is the sermon, aimed at hearts still looking for a corpse when the whole point of the message is that there is no corpse to find.

Luke 24:6-8

He is not here, but is risen, remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, and the angels quote back to the women Jesus's own repeated prediction, the Son of man must be delivered, be crucified, and the third day rise again, a prophecy Luke recorded at 9:22, 9:44, and 18:31-33. The women remembered his words, the text says, the very thing the disciples on the Emmaus road have not yet done, and the bench notes this is the pattern for the whole chapter, that resurrection faith comes by being reminded of what Christ already said rather than by any new revelation. The angels do not argue the resurrection; they simply hold up the promise already given and let the empty tomb answer for itself.

Luke 24:9-10

The women return and tell all these things to the eleven and to all the rest, and Luke names them, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, with other women besides. This is the climax of Luke's own thread of naming women through the whole Gospel, and the bench across the tradition notes the weight of the detail for the record's honesty, since in first-century Jewish and Roman courts a woman's testimony carried little legal standing, and no forger inventing a resurrection story for credibility would make women its first witnesses. Joanna, introduced at 8:3 as the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, gives Luke a source with plausible access to court circles as well.

Luke 24:11-12

Their words seemed to the apostles as idle tales, and they believed them not, Luke's own blunt confession that the resurrection was not an easy story the first disciples were primed to accept. Yet Peter arises and runs to the sepulchre, stoops down, sees the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departs wondering, a detail John's Gospel expands with the beloved disciple running alongside him and the grave clothes' orderly arrangement, evidence against a hurried grave robbery. Peter's private wondering here, still short of faith, sets up the personal appearance to him alone that verse 34 will report almost in passing.

Luke 24:13-14

a village called Emmaus: Two disciples travel that same day to a village called Emmaus, threescore furlongs from Jerusalem, about seven miles, talking together of all these things that had happened. Emmaus's exact site is disputed among several candidates in the archaeological record, and the bench holds the location loosely while noting the distance itself, a half day's walk each way, gives the conversation room to run its full course. Their talk, all these things, sets the scene as two believers processing grief and confusion together, exactly the condition in which the risen Lord chooses to meet them.

Luke 24:15-16

Jesus himself draws near and walks with them, but their eyes were holden that they should not know him, a supernatural restraint Luke states as fact without further explanation. The bench reads the withholding as purposeful rather than incidental to the resurrection body's nature, since it is lifted deliberately at verse 31, allowing the whole conversation to unfold with the disciples speaking freely about their shattered hopes to the very man those hopes concern. Some hold the restraint was in their own grief-clouded perception, others that it was Christ's own act on their sight, and both readings serve the scene the same way.

Luke 24:17-18

Jesus asks what they are discussing, and they stand still, sad, and Cleopas answers with something close to astonishment, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days. Cleopas is the only one of the two named, and the bench notes a tradition, going back to Hegesippus as reported by Eusebius, identifying him with the Clopas of John 19:25 and as a relative of Joseph, though this rests on later testimony rather than the text itself. His question drips with the ordinary assumption that no one in Jerusalem that week could possibly be unaware of what had just happened to Jesus of Nazareth.

Luke 24:19-20

Asked what things, they answer, concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how the chief priests and rulers delivered him to be condemned and crucified. Their summary is accurate history but stalled theology, a prophet who died, with no resurrection yet reckoned into the account they can give, and the bench notes this is precisely the gap Jesus is about to close. Their words unwittingly echo Moses's own description of a coming prophet at Deuteronomy 18:15, a connection the two travelers cannot yet see standing in front of them.

Luke 24:21

But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel, and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done, a confession of hope deferred spoken almost in the past tense, as if the hope itself had already died with him. The bench reads their redemption hope as tied to the common expectation of national and political deliverance, the very expectation Jesus's own teaching had been quietly correcting throughout his ministry without their fully grasping it. Their mention of the third day shows they know Christ's own prediction of rising again, yet the fact has not yet connected in their minds to any living hope.

Luke 24:22-24

They rehearse the women's report, a vision of angels which said he was alive, and how certain of the men went and found the tomb even as the women had said, but him they saw not. The travelers hold the report at arm's length, astonished rather than persuaded, and their closing line, him they saw not, is the whole company's honest position at this point in the day, evidence of an empty tomb without yet any evidence of a living Christ to explain it. This is the state of mind Jesus is about to address directly, not by producing himself first but by opening the scriptures first.

Luke 24:25-26

Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken, ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory. The rebuke is sharp but not contemptuous, aimed at their slowness to believe the prophets rather than at their intelligence, and the ought expresses a divine necessity, the Messiah's suffering was not an accident that derailed the plan but the very shape the plan required. This is Luke's clearest single statement that a suffering Messiah was always the prophetic expectation rightly read, against the common first-century assumption of a purely triumphant deliverer.

Luke 24:27

And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself, the single verse the whole site's method of reading the Old Testament stands on. The risen Lord's own hermeneutic treats the entire Hebrew canon, law and prophets together, as bearing a unified witness to himself, not merely a handful of proof texts but the scriptures as a whole read Christocentrically, a claim he repeats and expands at verses 44-47 below. The bench across the tradition takes this as Jesus's own authorization for reading Moses's sacrifices, the Passover lamb, the prophets' suffering servant, and the whole sweep of Israel's story as pointing to his death and resurrection, without specifying every text he used on the seven-mile walk.

Luke 24:28-29

As they draw near the village, Jesus makes as though he would go further, and the two constrain him, Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent, and he goes in to stay with them. The bench reads his making as though as a genuine test of their hospitality rather than any deception, drawing out an invitation freely given rather than forcing his company on them, a small courtesy consistent with how he receives welcome throughout Luke's Gospel. Their insistence becomes the hinge of the whole scene, since it is in staying, at their own request, that recognition follows.

Luke 24:30-31

As he sits at meat, he takes bread, blesses it, breaks it, and gives to them, and their eyes were opened and they knew him, and he vanished out of their sight. The bench is divided on whether the gesture itself, echoing the feeding of the multitudes and the Last Supper's own breaking of bread, was the trigger for recognition, or whether it was simply the moment their sight was supernaturally restored, the same restraint lifted that had held their eyes at verse 16; both readings agree the meal is where faith and sight meet. His vanishing rather than walking out the door marks the resurrection body as no longer bound to ordinary movement, consistent with his appearing in the midst of the disciples later in this same chapter.

Luke 24:32

Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures, the two ask each other, naming the inward witness that had accompanied the outward teaching even before their eyes were opened. The bench across the ages has taken this burning heart as the pattern for every believer's experience of scripture rightly opened, an inward confirmation running alongside, not substituting for, the content of what is taught. Wesley's own heart-warming experience at Aldersgate later drew explicitly on this verse's language, a small thread from this text into the site's own Wesleyan heritage.

Luke 24:33-34

They rise the same hour and return to Jerusalem, finding the eleven gathered together, who greet them with news of their own, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. This is the only mention in the four Gospels of an appearance to Peter alone, though Paul independently confirms it at 1 Corinthians 15:5, and the bench notes the tact of all the writers in leaving the details of that private meeting untold, a mercy toward the man who had denied his Lord three days before. The two accounts, Emmaus and Simon, converging in the same hour show the resurrection testimony arriving from multiple independent directions at once.

Luke 24:35

The two from Emmaus tell what happened in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread, closing their own testimony just as Jesus himself appears in the room. Luke's phrase breaking of bread becomes, by Acts 2:42, a fixed description of the early church's own gathered meal and worship, and the bench notes the connection is unlikely to be accidental in a two-volume work by the same author, the Emmaus meal quietly modeling the pattern the church would soon practice regularly. The travelers' report is the last human testimony to the resurrection the chapter records before the risen Lord testifies to himself.

Luke 24:36-37

As they thus spoke, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them and said, Peace be unto you, and they were terrified, supposing they had seen a spirit. The ordinary Jewish greeting, shalom, carries its full weight here, peace spoken by the very one whose death had seemed to end all peace, yet the disciples' first reaction is fear rather than joy, taking the appearance for a ghost. John's Gospel places this same appearance behind doors that were shut for fear of the Jews, a detail Luke does not repeat but which the bench reads as consistent with the locked room the disciples' fear implies.

Luke 24:38-40

Why are ye troubled, and why do thoughts arise in your hearts, Jesus asks, and answers their fear with physical evidence, Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself, handle me and see, for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. The bench reads this as the clearest anti-docetic statement in the Gospels, a direct refusal of any reading that would make the resurrection merely spiritual or visionary, insisting instead on a real body bearing the wounds of the crucifixion still identifiably his own. The invitation to handle him answers the disciples' fear at the level it was raised, offering touch as well as sight.

Luke 24:41-43

While they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, a state the bench reads as belief overwhelmed rather than belief absent, joy so great it could hardly credit itself, Jesus asks for meat, and they give him a piece of broiled fish and honeycomb, which he eats before them. The eating is a second and different proof from the touching just offered, since a spirit does not require food, and Luke records the detail as plain, observable fact rather than argument. The bench notes fish and honeycomb as common, humble fare, the risen Lord's first recorded meal after the resurrection an entirely ordinary one.

Luke 24:44

These are the words which I spake unto you while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me, Jesus tells the gathered disciples, restating and expanding verse 27's claim to the assembled group. The threefold naming, law, prophets, psalms, corresponds to the traditional three divisions of the Hebrew scriptures, Torah, Nevi'im, and the Writings represented by their largest book, so the verse claims the whole of what would become the Hebrew Bible as testimony to himself. This is the risen Lord's own charter for reading every part of the Old Testament in light of his person, the standing rule this whole site's exposition follows in seeking the Christ-ward line running through every book of the canon.

Luke 24:45-46

Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, and said, thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day. The opening of understanding is presented as Christ's own act on the disciples' minds, not merely better argument but a granted capacity to see what the text had said all along, and the bench notes this as the pattern for all right reading of scripture, illumination alongside instruction. The behoved repeats the ought of verse 26, the same divine necessity, suffering and rising as the required shape of the Messiah's work rather than an unplanned detour from it.

Luke 24:47-48

And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem, and ye are witnesses of these things, Jesus commissions the eleven and those with them, the message and its starting point both drawn out of the scriptures he had just opened. Beginning at Jerusalem sets the very geography Acts will trace, the gospel moving outward from the city of the crucifixion to Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth exactly as Acts 1:8 restates it, making this verse the hinge between Luke's two volumes. Ye are witnesses names the apostolic office in its simplest terms, men testifying to what they had seen and heard, not inventing a new system but reporting an event.

Luke 24:49

the promise of my Father: And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you, but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem until ye be endued with power from on high, Jesus tells them, the last of Luke's Holy Ghost thread before Acts takes it up as its own subject. The promise of the Father names what Acts 1:4-5 and 2:1-4 will show fulfilled at Pentecost, and endued with power translates a word picturing being clothed, wrapped in strength not their own for a task beyond their own resources. The command to tarry matters as much as the promise itself, the disciples told to wait rather than act until the power arrives, a pattern the continuationist reading of this thread takes as still instructive for the church's dependence on the Spirit.

Luke 24:50-51

He leads them out as far as Bethany, lifts up his hands and blesses them, and while he blessed them he was parted from them and carried up into heaven, Luke's own account of the ascension, told again more fully as the opening scene of Acts 1:9-11. Bethany, on the Mount of Olives, was the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus and the place from which the triumphal entry began, and the bench notes the fittingness of the ascension beginning near the same slope, the last recorded act of Jesus toward his disciples a raised hand of blessing rather than a word of farewell. Some early manuscripts omit carried up into heaven, though the parallel in Acts 1:9 secures the ascension as Luke's own consistent record across both his books.

Luke 24:52-53

returned to Jerusalem with great joy: They worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God, Luke's closing line and the last beat of the joy thread that opened the Gospel with the angel's good tidings of great joy at 2:10. The disciples' joy at their Lord's departure, rather than grief, marks their full grasp at last of what the resurrection and ascension mean, worship replacing the fear and doubt that filled the chapter's earlier scenes. Luke's Gospel ends where his second volume, Acts, will pick straight up, the same temple, the same waiting disciples, the promise of the Father about to fall.
