Acts 4:1-4

the priests, and the captain of the temple: As they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, the temple's own police force led by an officer second only to the high priest, so the arrest is an official act, not a mob's. They were grieved that the apostles taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead, the Sadducees' own denial of any resurrection at all giving them a doctrinal reason to want the preaching stopped that the Pharisees would not have shared. They laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day, for it was now eventide, the Sanhedrin unable to meet after dark under its own rules, so the arrest simply holds the apostles overnight. Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed, and the number of the men grew to about five thousand, the arrest itself unable to stop the growth this book keeps measuring.

Acts 4:5-7

On the morrow their rulers, and elders, and scribes, and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, are gathered together at Jerusalem, the same council and largely the same men who had tried Jesus himself only weeks before. Annas, deposed by Rome years earlier yet still called high priest here, held the office's real influence in his family long after losing its title, a detail the bench reads as accurate to the politics of the period rather than a slip on Luke's part. When they had set them in the midst, they asked, by what power, or by what name, have ye done this, the council's own question naming the two categories, power and name, that Peter's answer will address directly.

Acts 4:8-10

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, the same phrase used of Pentecost now describing a courtroom, and the bench notes the fulfillment of Luke 12:11-12, where Jesus had promised the Spirit would teach the disciples what to say when brought before rulers. Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, Peter addresses them with full respect for the office even while about to indict its holders, a pattern the exposition marks as boldness without contempt. Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole: Peter answers the council's own question directly, naming both the power and the name they had asked about, and setting the council's crucifixion of Jesus against God's raising of him in one sentence.

Acts 4:11

This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner, Peter quotes Psalm 118:22 directly to the very builders the psalm names, the council itself standing in the place of the rejecting craftsmen. Jesus had already applied this verse to himself in the parable of the wicked husbandmen recorded at Matthew 21:42, so Peter's citation before the same authorities completes a line of application Jesus began. The bench notes the psalm's original setting, a stone once rejected by builders and later found indispensable, made an exact figure for a Messiah his own nation had condemned and God had exalted.

Acts 4:12

Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved: Peter states the exclusivity of Christ to the highest religious court in Israel without softening it for the audience or the setting. The bench across the eras reads this verse as one of the clearest statements in Scripture that salvation is found nowhere else, tied directly back to the healing just performed in that same name. The claim is made to the very men who had condemned that name to death, so the verse carries its full force as testimony delivered under threat rather than as safe doctrine spoken among friends.

Acts 4:13-14

the boldness of Peter and John: When they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled, unlearned meaning without formal rabbinic training rather than illiterate, and the council's surprise measures how far the apostles' confidence outran their credentials. They took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus, the council's own memory of Jesus supplying the explanation their theology could not, the boldness traced to companionship rather than education. Beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it, the living evidence in the room closing off every line of argument the council might otherwise have tried.

Acts 4:15-17

When they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, the deliberation held privately once the evidence in the room made a public argument impossible to win. What shall we do to these men, they ask, for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it: the council's own admission that the miracle is real and public is preserved in the record, an adversarial source conceding the fact even while resisting its implication. But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name: the council's strategy is containment rather than refutation, since refutation was no longer available to them.

Acts 4:18-20

They called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus, the council issuing a gag order it has no power to enforce beyond threat. Peter and John answer with a question rather than a refusal, whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye, placing the council in the position of having to answer against its own conscience. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard: the ground is eyewitness testimony, not opinion or preference, and the bench reads this verse as the classic statement of the limit of human authority over conscience wherever it contradicts a direct command of God.

Acts 4:21-22

So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people, the council's hand stayed by public opinion rather than by any change of conviction. For all men glorified God for that which was done, the crowd's response standing opposite the council's own hostility, and the exposition notes the same division that met the miracle at 3:9-13 now dividing the leaders from the people they claim to represent. The man was above forty years old on whom this miracle of healing was shewed, a detail Luke supplies to rule out any claim the healing was some minor or temporary ailment easily faked or self-correcting.

Acts 4:23-24

Being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them, the first move after release being toward the church rather than toward rest, the threat carried straight into the body that will answer it together. When they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, corporate prayer offered in response to persecution rather than complaint about it, and the prayer that follows is preserved in full as one of the earliest recorded prayers of the church. Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is opens the prayer on the Creator's own sovereignty before a single word is said about the threat just received.

Acts 4:25-28

Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things, the church quotes Psalm 2 as already describing its own situation, the ancient prophecy read as a template for the present crisis rather than a curiosity from the past. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together: every party in the crucifixion, Jewish and Roman, ruler and people, is named as fulfilling the psalm's own kings and rulers standing against the Lord and against his Christ. For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done holds God's sovereign plan and every human actor's real guilt together in one sentence, exactly as 2:23 had done, and the bench across every tradition declines to resolve what the prayer itself leaves joined.

Acts 4:29-31

And now, Lord, behold their threatenings, and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word: the church's prayer under threat asks not for the threat's removal but for boldness to keep speaking in spite of it, a request the bench notes is answered before the sentence is finished. By stretching forth thine hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus asks for more of the very activity that had brought the threat in the first place, the church choosing more exposure to danger over safety. When they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness: the shaking answers the prayer visibly, and boldness, the thread running from 4:13 through the whole book, is named again as the direct fruit of the Spirit's filling.

Acts 4:32-33

The multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul, neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had all things common, the description matching 2:44-45's earlier portrait and extending it now that the church has grown to thousands. The bench reads the sharing as voluntary and love-driven rather than commanded or enforced, a description of the church's early condition rather than a rule binding on every church in every age, a reading Peter's own words to Ananias in the next chapter will confirm. With great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all: the resurrection witness formula sounds again, and the great grace named here is presented as the source of the community's unity, not merely its byproduct.

Acts 4:34-35

Neither was there any among them that lacked, for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, the giving described as a response to need rather than a fixed proportion or a single required act. They laid them down at the apostles' feet, and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need, the apostles trusted with the practical stewardship of the gifts, a trust the next chapter's crisis with Ananias and Sapphira will test almost immediately. The bench notes need, not equal division, as the standard the distribution follows, the same principle Paul will later commend in 2 Corinthians 8:13-15.

Acts 4:36-37

Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, which is, being interpreted, the son of consolation, is introduced here for the first time, a Levite of the country of Cyprus who will become one of the most trusted men in the whole book, vouching for Paul at 9:27 and laboring beside him through the first mission to the Gentiles. Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet, his single act of generosity is recorded by name, standing as one specific example of the pattern just described in general terms, and the naming sets up the deliberate contrast the next chapter draws with Ananias, whose gift is given the opposite way. The bench notes Luke's habit of moving from a general description to one named case, the pattern he will use again for the community's failures as well as its virtues.
