2 Kings 10:1-3

Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria: Jehu's first letter does not demand surrender; it dares Samaria's rulers to set up one of Ahab's seventy sons as king and fight for the house, testing whether they will resist him at all. The seventy sons, some of them likely grandsons given the reckoning at verse thirteen, mark the size of a dynasty Jehu intends to end in full. The letter's real aim is to force the guardians to name their loyalty before Jehu ever draws a sword against them.

2 Kings 10:4-5

Two kings, Joram and Ahaziah, had already fallen before Jehu in one day, and the palace officers of Samaria reason from that record rather than from any fresh threat. Their surrender is total: they will crown no one, and they hand Jehu their own servitude in his words, do thou that which is good in thine eyes. Ahab's house is undone by the very officers his own line raised to guard it.

2 Kings 10:6-7

Jehu's second letter turns loyalty into an order, bring the heads of your master's sons by tomorrow. The men who raised these seventy princes obey without hesitation, and their obedience becomes the very act that empties Ahab's house of heirs. Their swift compliance answers Elijah's old sentence on Ahab's line with human hands willing to carry it out.

2 Kings 10:8-10

The heads are heaped at the city gate overnight, a public display meant to warn Samaria before Jehu speaks a word. In the morning Jehu names his own conspiracy against Joram plainly, then asks who struck down the seventy, deflecting blame onto the men who obeyed his letter. His declaration that nothing of the word of the Lord concerning Ahab's house shall fall to the earth names Elijah's prophecy at 1 Kings 21 as the standard by which the killing is measured, not his own ambition.

2 Kings 10:11

The purge in Jezreel widens past the royal sons to every great man, kinsman, and priest attached to Ahab's court, a category Barnes reads as the household clergy rather than the wider Baal priesthood later hunted at Samaria. Nothing of the house is left standing in the city where Naboth's vineyard and Jezebel's window both stood. The dynasty Ahab built on Naboth's blood is closed out in the same place it was built.

2 Kings 10:12-14

On the road to Samaria, at a place named for shepherds binding their flocks to shear them, Jehu meets forty-two kinsmen of Ahaziah of Judah traveling north in ignorance of the revolution. He takes them alive and kills every one at the pit of the shearing house, a slaughter that reaches south into David's own line even though Ahaziah himself had already died at Jehu's hand. The same totality appears again when Athaliah moves against Judah's own royal line at chapter eleven, a crime this chapter's slaughter of Ahaziah's kinsmen already anticipates.

2 Kings 10:15-16

Jehonadab son of Rechab, whose descendants' unbroken obedience to their father's vow of tent life and abstinence is later held up by Jeremiah 35 against all of unfaithful Judah, is met and taken up into Jehu's own chariot. The handshake and the question, is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart, join a violent reformer to a man whose piety needed no reforming at all. Jehonadab's presence in the chariot lends Jehu's coming purge a witness of undisputed integrity.

2 Kings 10:17

Samaria receives the same treatment Jezreel already received, every survivor connected to Ahab's house put to death. The narrator repeats the phrase from verse ten almost exactly, according to the saying of the Lord, which he spake to Elijah, tying the whole campaign back to the sentence pronounced in the vineyard at Naboth's death. The dynasty of Omri that began with a purchased hill in chapter sixteen ends with a purchased throne handed to Nimshi's grandson.

2 Kings 10:18-19

Ahab served Baal a little: Jehu's proclamation that Ahab served Baal a little but Jehu will serve him much is theater aimed at gathering every worshipper into one place. Clarke and the commentators read it as calculated deception rather than any change of heart, since Jehu has already sworn allegiance to the Lord's word through Elijah and Elisha. The lie works because Baal's own worshippers have no reason yet to suspect the king who just destroyed their rivals in Ahab's court.

2 Kings 10:20-21

Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal: Jehu borrows the Law's own vocabulary for his summons, a solemn assembly, the phrase Leviticus and Numbers reserve for the Lord's own appointed feasts, and turns it against the god it was never meant to serve. Every worshipper of Baal in Israel answers the call, and the temple fills from one end to the other. The completeness of the gathering is the whole point, since nothing is purged that is left standing outside the house.

2 Kings 10:22-24

Jehu orders vestments brought out for every worshipper, a detail that lets Baal's own priests be told apart from any stray servant of the Lord who might slip in among them. The distinction he demands for their safety is the same distinction that will condemn them, since no one wearing that robe leaves the building alive. Eighty men are posted outside on pain of their own lives, so the trap depends on human fear as much as on the crowd's misplaced confidence.

2 Kings 10:25-27

Once the burnt offering is finished, Jehu gives the order to the guard and the captains, and Baal's worshippers are struck down inside the house that had just filled to capacity. The image of Baal, apparently a stone pillar standing outside the temple, is broken down separately from the wooden images burned within, and the house itself is reduced to a common latrine, still standing that way when the record was written. The Baal-house trap that filled the temple with Baal's own people empties it just as completely.

2 Kings 10:28-29

Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel closes one purge in a single sentence, but the next verse opens the limit of it, since Jehu never touches the golden calves Jeroboam set at Bethel and Dan two centuries earlier. The foreign cult Jezebel imported from Tyre is gone; the native counterfeit worship the whole northern kingdom was founded on stays exactly where Jeroboam left it. Jehu's reform reaches every altar built by a queen and stops at the one built by a king.

2 Kings 10:30

The Lord's own commendation credits Jehu for doing what was right in executing judgment on Ahab's house, and promises four generations on Israel's throne as the reward, a dynasty no other northern line receives. That promise is kept to the letter: Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam the second, and Zechariah reign in turn before the line ends at 2 Kings 15:12. The reward answers the deed rather than the man, since the very next verse turns to what the deed left undone.

2 Kings 10:31

But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart is the narrator's own verdict, set directly against the commendation just given in verse thirty. Zeal that executes judgment on another man's house is not the same thing as a heart that keeps the law in its own, and Jehu's twenty-eight years prove the distinction rather than resolve it. Spurgeon preached this very verse as a warning that religious activity without a governed heart is heedlessness by another name.

2 Kings 10:32-33

Judgment does not stop at Ahab's house; it turns next on Jehu's own kingdom. Hazael of Damascus begins stripping Israel's eastern territory, the very ground Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh had chosen for its pasture back in the wilderness, fulfilling what Elisha had already wept over at 2 Kings 8:12. The same chapter that records God's promise to Jehu's line records the first cost of the sins that promise did not erase.

2 Kings 10:34-36

the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel: The closing formula credits Jehu with might worthy of a fuller record, but the record itself stays thin, a silence Clarke and Henry both read as the price of a reign spent on force without matching devotion. Jehu is buried in Samaria among the very kings whose house he destroyed, and his son Jehoahaz succeeds him without incident. Twenty-eight years on the throne close a chapter that opened with seventy heads in baskets and ends with one king quietly asleep with his fathers.
