The closing formula points past the text to “the book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah”, a record now lost. Jehoram is buried, and “his son Ahaziah reigned in his place”, so the narrator passes from death to succession without a word of mourning.

John Gill, drawing on 2 Chronicles 21, notes that Jehoram lay outside the tombs of the kings, with no funeral honours and no mourning. Albert Barnes notes that the son Ahaziah also bears the name Jehoahaz. The two parts of the name are reversed.
