on Joshua 24:5-7
The darkness of verse 7 is the cloud of Exodus 14:20. Though those who watched died in the wilderness, Joshua tells this crowd, "Your very eyes saw what I did to the Egyptians". Thirty-eight years then close in one line, "you lived in the wilderness for a long time".

Exodus 14:7 counts six hundred of the best chariots at the head of Pharaoh's pursuit, with all the other chariots. Chariots met Israel again at the waters of Merom, and 11:9 records Joshua hamstringing the horses and burning the chariots as the LORD ordered. The LORD defeated both hosts.
