on Judges 9:16-18
Jotham drops the picture and names the men standing below him. His charge has three parts: Gideon "risked his life to deliver you," they killed his seventy sons "on a single stone," and they crowned the son of his maidservant "because he is your brother". The speech turns the narrative of verse 5 back on the town that did the killing.

Matthew Henry notes that Gideon fought Shechem's battles at the risk of his own life, and calls it a shame that they needed reminding. The verse sets that debt against 8:35, where Israel showed no kindness to his house. The sentence runs straight on into the charge.
