His own tribe, Manasseh, and the three northern tribes of Asher, Zebulon, and Naphtali hastened to join him. Issachar was probably unable to do so, because the Midianites were encamped in the heart of their country. Asher no longer “abode in his breaches,” as in the time of Jabin Jdg 6:17, perhaps ashamed of their former backwardness, and stung by the rebuke of Deborah; perhaps, too, from feeling the Midianite yoke much more galling than that of Jabin.

Jezreel is the grain valley of the north, so the raiders camp on the harvest. Verse 34 is the second of seven times the book says the Spirit of the Lord came upon a man, after Othniel at 3:10, and the Hebrew verb means putting on a garment. His own clan, whose altar he had torn down, answers first, then the northern tribes Deborah had summoned.

Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali
Albert Barnes observes that Asher, which stayed in its harbors under Jabin at 5:17, now comes, perhaps stung by Deborah's rebuke. He accounts for the absence of Issachar by the Midianite camp pitched in the heart of its land. Verse 33 places that camp in the Valley of Jezreel.

Of which tribe he was; not only he called by the trumpet that part of the tribe, the Abiezrites, who were within the sound of it, but the rest of the tribe at a greater distance from him he sent messengers to, acquainting them with his design, and inviting them to his assistance.
