A similar use of the name Amorite, instead of the more usual name Canaanite, occurs in Jos 24:15, Jos 24:18. Perhaps a special reason may be found for the use of Amorite, if the prophet was addressing those who dwelt in the mountains, where the Amorites chiefly dwelt. The idolatries of the Amorites seem, too, to have been preeminently abominable (see 2Ki 21:11; 1Ki 21:26).

The prophet is unnamed, says nothing of a rescue, and never appears again. His speech follows the angel's at 2:1-3: out of Egypt, delivered from every oppressor, given the land, then charged with disobedience. The charge is exact, "You must not fear the gods of the Amorites", and verse 25 finds an altar to Baal at the house of the man God is about to call.

Albert Barnes notes that Joshua 24:15 and 24:18 also use Amorite where Canaanite is more usual. He suggests the prophet spoke to people living in the mountains, where the Amorites mostly dwelt. Verse 2 has Israel hiding in those mountains.

And I said unto you, I am the Lord your God, The covenant God of them and their fathers, and they ought not to have owned and acknowledged any other besides him: fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell; meaning not a fear of being hurt by them, but such a fear and reverence of them as to worship them, which was only to be given to the Lord.
He intends hereby to bring them to repentance; and our repentance is then right and genuine when the sinfulness of sin, as disobedience to God, is that in it which we chiefly lament.
